Study and research options
Students interested in the Molecular Sciences have many study options both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Through the School of Molecular Sciences and its constituent Departments of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, and Pharmacy students can enrol in a number of courses and study a wide variety of subjects.
Biochemistry
Undergraduate
The Department of Biochemistry is responsible for teaching biochemistry and molecular biology units to undergraduates in the second and third year. A fourth, BSc(Hons) year is also available. In a typical year, 150-200 students are enrolled in second year biochemistry, 70 in third year and 15 in honours.
Postgraduate
The department offers PhD degrees and students also have the opportunity to enrol in Masters programs specialising in biotechnology and bioinformatics.
Chemistry
Undergraduate
Students interested in chemistry can enrol in a number of courses, from more specialist courses (nanotechnology, medicinal chemistry) to more general courses (general science). Bachelor degrees are three years full-time study. You can choose chemistry subjects at all years of study. Students completing a major in chemistry with good grades have the opportunity to undertake honours in chemistry, which is in general a pre-requisite for further study in chemistry.

Postgraduate
The Department of Chemistry offers a number of postgraduate degrees, including both research and coursework degrees.
The Department has excellent facilities for research, including state-of-the-art instrumentation and computing facilities. We currently have about 30 honours, masters and postgraduate research students in the department. There are 9 permanent academic staff as well as several additional research-only staff, all supported by technical and administrative personnel.

Genetics
Undergraduate
Undergraduate students can major in genetics and an honours year is available for students who achieve the requisite marks. Read further information about undergraduate genetic subjects and honours level study in genetics.
Postgraduate
Masters and PhD postgraduate degrees by research can be pursued in the Department of Genetics, part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The Department currently has more than 20 postgraduate students carrying out research towards MSc and PhD degrees. This research is supervised by the academic staff of the Department of Genetics.

Pharmacy
Undergraduate
The School of Pharmacy offers courses in the disciplines of science and pharmacy at the Bendigo campus.
For more information about studying pharmacy please see the course information page.
Postgraduate
The School of Pharmacy and Applied Science offers research-based postgraduate programs leading to Master of Applied Science and Doctor of Philosophy. Applicants normally have an honours degree in pharmacy, applied science, science, or an equivalent degree. Candidates with H1 equivalence are eligible to apply for a scholarship. For further details see the postgraduate students’ information site or consult the information at the Research Services page.
