Commercial opportunities

LIMS research provides an innovation pipeline from basic research and concept development through to product realisation and commercialisation – work which is underpinning the development of Australia’s emerging bioeconomy.

Collaboration

Acting as a hub, the new LIMS facility will provide infrastructure for collaborative projects with partners both internal and external to La Trobe University.

Collaborative research with partner institutions including the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Biomarker Translation, the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science, and the AgriBio, Centre for AgriBioscience has already led to the creation of several start-up companies including Evogenics, Hexima, Sensologix and AdAlta.

Additionally, these partnerships allow for the sharing of equipment and facilities, and training and public outreach programs, which greatly enhance the capacity of each entity to fulfil its research function.

LIMS’s collaborative efforts will also extend to cross-faculty projects within the Faculties of Science, Technology and Engineering; Health Science; Law and Management; and Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as links to acclaimed research centres in Australia and overseas.

Product development

LIMS researchers are working towards achieving new discoveries in the field of biotechnology and molecular science. These discoveries are used to develop new and improved products including vaccines, drugs, biotechnology products, sensors and scalable environmental solutions for both government and industry.

In addition to developing new products, this process is generating valuable intellectual property for the University in the areas of antibodies and medical diagnostics, pest resistance plants, and environmental management products.
