Events and Culture

Events and Entertainment Attending La Trobe events is a great way to enrich your university life.

Our two largest campuses, Bendigo and Melbourne, hold the greatest variety of events. However, our other regional campuses also offer great entertainment options.

Art Galleries

La Trobe exhibits a wide range of engaging art works throughout its three art galleries:

Balls

Celebrate your achievements and those of your fellow students at a formal ball. La Trobe offers student and faculty balls as well as formal dinners across our campuses.

Faculties, clubs and sporting bodies all hold gala events throughout the year. Make sure you join groups that interest you to receive emails regarding up-coming events.

Breakfast & BBQs

La Trobe wouldn’t be a truly Australian university without the traditional free feed! Most of our campuses have student barbecues and free breakfasts throughout the year - get in touch with your local student services association to find out more.

Club Events

La Trobe clubs run a wide range of events throughout the year. To see a full list of upcoming events visit the La Trobe Student Union Clubs Site.

Cultural Sponsorship Programs

La Trobe University supports the Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, a heritage and cultural space for the community. We are also a major sponsor of the Bendigo Art Gallery, one of Australia’s oldest and largest regional art galleries (which houses a dedicated La Trobe University gallery) and the SheppARTon Festival, a diverse art festival held throughout Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley region over the Labour Day long weekend.

Indigenous Cultural Programs and Events

The Office of the Director, Indigenous Education conducts various events at our campuses, including Harmony Day, Sorry Day and NAIDOC. We also host the Hyllus Maris Annual Memorial Lecture at our Melbourne campus – the first memorial lecture in honour of an Aboriginal woman on an Australian university campus.

Library

La Trobe Library has a large collection of DVDs (including movies, foreign language, documentaries and TV series), music CDs and scores, and many great reads including novels, foreign language books, biographies, popular culture, art, science and much more.  The Library regularly hosts art exhibitions, book launches, indigenous events and displays.

Music & Comedy

La Trobe has an active music and comedy scene. Many outdoor events take place in the warmer months while during winter live music and comedy can be seen at the campus bar or hall. Check the Ratsheet for upcoming events.

Any student can enter the National Campus Band Competition – it’s the biggest student band competition of its type in the world. Held at our Bendigo campus, it's a great way to get live music experience, not to mention the attention of record companies and the media. Previous winners and entrants have included Eskimo Joe, The Vines, Jebediah, George, 78 Saab, Augie March and The Vasco Era.

For further information email Martin Cheale.

Orientation Activities

Orientation Week activities are held at all campuses at the start of each academic year. The programs are designed to help you prepare for your time at university and are a great opportunity to make new friends, and have fun! International students should find out more about our specialised Welcome Festival.

Student Theatre and Film

Check out one of the many events run by Student Theatre and Film or better still get involved by acting, directing, writing or just helping out.  It’s a great way to get to know other students as well as enhancing your university experience.
