ALL Unit information for staff

What is the ALL Unit?
In 2010, Learning and Academic Skills (LAS) and ESL staff from across the University were brought together to form the new, University-wide Academic Language and Learning (ALL) Unit. As a result, each Faculty and each Campus has at least one ALL Unit staff member.
ALL Unit staff work closely with teaching staff in all Faculties and on all campuses to ensure that all La Trobe students – including those from non-English-speaking backgrounds – develop high-level academic speaking, writing, reading, and numeracy skills required for successful learning in their courses.
How the ALL Unit works
ALL Unit staff will work with academic teaching staff to:
- Diagnose – Design and/or deliver academic skills diagnostics and follow-up programs;
- Design – Collaborate on course and subject design, with a focus on embedding skills in subjects;
- Deliver – Provide one-off lectures, drop-in sessions, and small-group sessions focused on particular topics or subjects;
- Teach/Co-Teach – Lead or co-lead workshops, tutorials, and (where appropriate) specially designed undergraduate and postgraduate academic skills subjects;
- Resource – Prepare and share relevant web resources, including ESL;
- Advise – Advise on effective teaching and learning strategies for underprepared students;
- Consult – Following a formal referral from staff, provide a limited number of individual student consultations; and
- Develop – Prepare and lead/co-lead professional development for tutors and other relevant staff.
