Examinations

This page contains information regarding examinations.

General

Students are required and expected to sit all examinations at the time scheduled. Failure to attend an examination will result in a failed grade for the subject.

Official examination timetable

The Examination Timetable will be published on the University website 6 weeks prior to the commencement of the Examination period. It will also be available on the Business Portal. It will be posted on the noticeboard at the Student Centre and in the library.

Students are responsible for consulting these sources for information on the time, date, and location of examinations for individual subjects.

Mis-reading of the timetable, travel plans and employment are not accepted as reasons for nonattendance at an examination.

Alternative examination arrangements

Alternative arrangements may be granted for serious circumstances that are beyond the control of the student. See the School of Business Guidelines re Alternative Examination Arrangements for specific information on this matter.

Special examinations

In exceptional cases, students applying for Special Consideration may be granted a Special Examination. Students applying for Special Consideration should be aware that this application does not entitle them to a special examination. The granting of special examinations occurs only in exceptional and serious circumstances.

Application forms for Special Consideration are available in the School of Business Student Services Department.

Supplementary examinations

The University has recognised two situations in which it is appropriate to provide the opportunity for supplementary assessment:

  1. A student who has obtained 50 percent or more in a subject but who has failed to meet a compulsory (hurdle) requirement shall be offered a supplementary assessment in order to meet this requirement, unless it is impractical to provide this assessment. Upon successful completion of the supplementary assessment, the original mark will stand.
  2. An undergraduate student who has passed at least two-thirds of his/her enrolment (measured in credit points) shall be offered supplementary assessment in any failed subject for which a mark of 47 percent or more has been obtained. Upon successful completion of supplementary assessment, the final mark awarded shall be 50 percent.

Decisions regarding whether or not a student will be granted supplementary assessment are made at the end of the year after all final marks are recorded. Students are notified of the details of the assessment by letter.

Timetable for special and supplementary examinations

Special and supplementary examinations will be held in or near the second week of January. Students eligible to sit a special or supplementary examination must be available to do so during the announced schedule. Students who fail to attend these examinations will have no further opportunity to sit the examination and a fail result will be recorded.

Alternative examination arrangements

Students are required to sit all examinations at the time scheduled in the University Examination Timetable. Failure to attend an examination will result in a fail grade for the subject. Under limited circumstances described below, students may request alternative examination arrangements.

Timetable clashes

In the event of clashes in the official timetable, students should consult the Examinations Office where arrangements will be made to sit the conflicting exams at alternative times but on the same day.

Disabilities and ongoing medical conditions

Students with permanent or long-term disabilities, ongoing medical conditions, and temporary disabilities may be eligible for alternative examination arrangements. To determine eligibility, you must register with the Equity and Access Unit and have your request for alternative arrangements assessed by a Disability Advisory Team member. You are urged to contact Equity and Access early in the semester or as soon as a disability is apparent so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Other reasons

Alternative arrangements may be granted for serious circumstances that are beyond the control of the student. The primary serious reason for requesting an Alternative Examination Arrangement is the existence of an acute medical condition during or immediately prior to an examination.

Non-medical reasons will normally be restricted to the following circumstances:

  • legally binding civic obligations such as jury duty, court appearances, etc.
  • commitments to represent the university or the country at an international event such
as sports competitions and cultural performances.
Reasons that won’t be considered

Approval will not be given to accommodate travel plans, attendance at social events such as weddings, visits with relatives/friends or any discretionary activities.

Documentation

Alternative Examination Arrangements will not be approved without full and detailed documentary evidence to support the request.

Late request submissions

Requests for Alternative Examination Arrangements will not normally be accepted after the closing date for submission posted by the Examinations Office. Late applications must be discussed with the Student Services Manager, and will only be considered in extraordinary circumstances that could not have been anticipated before the submission deadline.
