Studying finance at La Trobe University

Finance is an important, practical area of study which concerns itself with the commercial activities of providing funds and capital, as well as the management of money, credit and investments. In essence, it studies how individuals, businesses and organizations raise, allocate and use monetary resources over time.

The Bachelor of Finance

The Bachelor of Finance at La Trobe University provides knowledge and training to enable graduates to pursue a career with financial institutions and large companies with a significant Finance function (such as multinationals). A student choosing the Finance degree will be trained in the four major areas of Finance: corporate finance, international finance, investment and portfolio management, and risk management. This is combined with units in skills complementary to Finance, such as: economic theory, statistics, quantitative analysis, financial law and financial accounting.

The Finance degree emphasises the specialist modelling, spread-sheeting and econometric skills required for stockbroking, analyst and financial planning roles. It introduces practical, real-life applications through the study of a range of case studies relating to key activities, such as: fund management and performance evaluation, major project modelling and evaluation, share and research analysis and decision-making, and currency trading applications. Students also gain a significant appreciation of the operation and workings of the share market and futures markets in Australia.

The Bachelor of Finance double degrees

A number of double degrees have been announced for 2009. These degrees allow you to combine a range of specialisations which will strengthen the scope and career opportunities of your final degree.

Career opportunities

Finance graduates are equipped to pursue careers in the fields of corporate finance (for example, mergers and acquisitions, new issues, foreign exchange, securities portfolios, syndicated loans and money market operations). In any of these areas, graduates may be employed as analysts (for example, dealing with forecasting financial markets, pricing financial products and developing trading strategies), as dealers (in foreign exchange, bond, stock and money markets) and even as sales people who market financial products.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Finance are eligible to apply for an associate membership of FINSIA.
