School of LawAdmission to practice in AustraliaAll our Bachelor of Laws programs include thirteen core units approved by the Council of Legal Education which must be completed in order to qualify for admission to legal practice in Victoria. For further information on these units, please see. Once admitted in Victoria, graduates (eligibility to work in Australia will depend on visa status) can seek admission in other Australian jurisdictions. Admission to practice in Victoria normally requires the completion of a supervised workplace traineeship (formerly known as articles of clerkship) or a practical legal training course conducted by the Leo Cussen Institute [both on-site and on-line] or the College of Law Victoria [on-line only]. All programs include a placement component. For further information on these programs, please see www.collaw.edu.au and www.leocussen.vic.edu.au International students in Australia are not permitted to undertake a practical training course on-line due to visa requirements. As a result, students seeking admission in Victoria must normally undertake the Leo Cussen program on-site which runs twice a year for 24 weeks including a 3 week professional placement. Ten places are normally reserved each year for international students and further places are available on a ballot basis. In some cases, it may be possible to undertake an on-line practical training course offered in another State whilst residing overseas and complete the placement professional component overseas. Students with an overseas LLB wishing to complete some or all of the law units required for admission to practice in Australia are advised to apply to the Legal Practice Admission Board in the State of choice for a ruling on what units they must complete prior to commencing their studies at La Trobe Law.
