Dr Ewen Michael is an Associate Professor in the School of Management and currently serves as the Director of Tourism & Hospitality. He is responsible for supervising these disciplines within the School and for developing new coursework postgraduate programmes for these fields of study.
Dr Michael returned to La Trobe University in 1987, after a career in industry and research. In the 1980s he worked as an economic policy analyst and project leader for the Australian Railway Research and Development Organisation Ltd., where he was responsible for conducting a wide range of industry and academic consultancies. After completing his PhD in the School of Economics, he helped to establish the original undergraduate programmes in Tourism & Hospitality in 1996, and continues to work in those fields.
Dr Michael’s teaching responsibilities include coordinating the economic and policy studies units in the School’s curriculum. In 2001, he was appointed to the editorial board of “Tourism Analysis”, and, in 2004 he helped to establish the “La Trobe University Centre for Public Sector Accountability and Governance” by serving as its Deputy-Director until late 2006. He currently co-ordinates the new master of Tourism programme for the school.
Dr. Michael is a flexible and self-motivated analyst with multi-disciplinary skills in economics, planning and policy. He has written extensively over the past 20 years on issues concerning economic impacts, public policy, transportation, tourism and community services, and on the development of niche markets. His current research is focussed on the development of niche market clusters as a means to enhance regional and urban tourism growth, but he continues to take an active interest in Public Policy.
