Brief profile
Dr Fiona Sutherland has been in academia for over twenty-six years, joining the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law in March 2009. Prior to this, she worked at Deakin University, Victoria College, and the Canberra College of Advanced Education. Before moving into higher education, Fiona worked in the public service in Canberra. She gained her Research Masters in Commerce, and her PhD from Deakin University.
Fiona has taught across a number of units in the Management discipline at both undergraduate and graduate level. These include Organisational Behaviour, Strategic Management, Organisation Theory, Organisational Change, and Business Communications. Her principal areas of research are organisational studies, forms of organising and organisational change.
Fiona is co-author with Professor Aaron Smith (RMIT University) of a research book titled Philosophies of Organizational Change (2011). The book is published by Elgar Publishing.
Fiona is also first author of a leading Australian textbook on organisational change which has proved very successful both in Australia and overseas. It is now in its 3rd edition, published in 2011.
Fiona is the recipient and Chief Investigator (CIs) of an ARC Discovery Project Grant. Funding is for a 3-year period, from February 2011 to February 2014. The research project, titled 'Organising for control in innovation-driven firms: Managing the efficiency-flexibility duality' , is administered from La Trobe University. Co-Chief Investigators on the project are Professor Aaron Smith (RMIT), Professor Ian Palmer (RMIT), and Professor Richard Dunford (Uni of Sydney).
Fiona has also published several journal articles and her theoretical work on dualities as well as articles on leadership and strategic change have been cited in a number of well regarded journals.
