Language and Academic SkillsReferring studentsThe vast majority of students we see at Language & Academic Skills (FSTE) have come of their own accord. However, if you are concerned about a student's...
you can refer the student to the LAS (FSTE) unit for an individual appointment with either of the LAS lecturers, Meg Rosse or Robyn Yucel. Please bear in mind that while a small number of students we see at LAS have poor academic performance, we also see a substantial number of average or above average students who are keen to make use of our services to develop their academic skills. Therefore, it is important that the LAS Unit is not promoted as simply a remedial service because this may discourage more able students from benefitting from our services. It is also important that students who are referred to us do not see it as a punishment but rather an opportunity to develop and improve their academic skills. Students whose first language is not English may benefit from going to the LAS ESL Unit (Humanities 3, Room 417). However, it is advised that such students are first referred to LAS FSTE. After assessing the student's needs, a decision will be made as to the most suitable LAS unit to assist the student.
