Making an appointment

The LAS lecturers in the Faculty, Meg, Robyn and Barbara, are available for individual appointments with undergraduate students, postgraduate students and staff. We can assist you in developing a variety of academic skills, including:

Writing
  • laboratory reports, essays, assignments and theses
  • analysing essay questions and essay planning
  • developing an argument
  • appropriate academic style
  • referencing and avoiding plagiarism
Oral presentations
  • preparation of visual aids
  • advice on presentation techniques
  • feedback on practice presentations
Study Skills
  • exam preparation
  • managing study tasks
  • adapting to university academic culture
  • reading scientific material
  • studying with a disability

Appointments are for 30 or 60 minutes, depending on your requirements. There is a maximum allowance of one hour per week per student.

Appointments can be made in person or by phone (not by email).

To make an appointment in person…

1. Write your name (first name and surname) on the appointment sheet outside the LAS office (PS1, Room 213). Write your name on one line for a half hour appointment and on two lines for a one hour appointment.

2. Email or drop in a hard copy of any draft written work you would like feedback on (there is an envelope on the door for hard copies if we’re not here). This should preferably be done two days before your appointment, particularly at busy times.

N.B. For writing tasks, you will need to tell us the following information:

  • Unit code/name e.g. ENV3WRM Water Resource Management
  • Details of the writing task e.g. number of words, due date
  • Any guidelines or criteria for the writing task

Since the appointment is a teaching session, not a proof-reading exercise, you will also need to provide us with the following information:

  • What aspects of your writing do you want us to focus on?
  • Any particular sections that you want feedback on?

3. If you can't make your appointment, be considerate and call or email us to let us know. It is likely that another student is waiting to take your appointment slot.

To make an appointment by phone…

As above, but call 9479 2432 and we'll write your name on the appointment sheet for you.

IMPORTANT
We are a teaching service, not a writing/assignment dry cleaning service! We do not ‘correct’ or ‘proofread’ your work. We provide feedback and advice to help you independently develop your academic skills.
