Individual consultations

To book a consultation

You can book an individual consultation for help with your writing, speaking, reading and listening.

The consultation is an opportunity to learn as much as you can about how to do your best in your studies. You can ask the adviser for strategies.

If you come for help with writing you should read and check for errors before you see an adviser. We do not proof read your work. We will point out any errors and advise you on how to correct these.

Postgraduate students

You can have a regular appointment of up to one hour per week. We recommend you seek help when you first start writing.

Undergraduate students

You can have a weekly appointment of up to 30 minutes. The LAS(ESL) advisers will usually only see your essay once. You can, however, make an appointment before you write an essay to discuss the essay question, or the plan or rough draft, and you can make another appointment for advice on the finished essay. You cannot make multiple appointments for the same essay.

When and where can you  submit written work?

  • Submit your writing by midday of the day BEFORE your appointment
  • Complete and attach a Coversheet for submission of work (DOC.35KB)
  • Bring it to Room 417,Humanities 3
  • OR send as an attachment to lasesl@latrobe.edu.au. NB: If you email it we can only print up to 5 pages.

'Drop-in' sessions

  • When: during semester from Monday - Friday between 1 - 2 pm
  • How long: You can see an adviser for up to 10 minutes
  • You can drop in and see us at this time to:
    • introduce yourself and register for LAS (ESL)
    • ask a quick question about your work
    • follow up on your individual consultation

Appointment guidelines

We have made the following guidelines because the demand for individual consultations can be very high.

  1. Only one appointment per week.
  2. Avoid changing appointment times. If you cancel an appointment you are unlikely to get another one in the same week.
  3. Make appointments well in advance. Book the appointment a week before you need to see the adviser.
  4. An adviser will only see you without an appointment during 'drop-in' time.
