English for Global Communication

Subject code: EDU4EGC

 

This subject is available as an undergraduate (any year level) or post-graduate subject. It is a 20 credit point subject available as an elective to international and local students from language backgrounds other than English, from any faculty, subject to the faculty course adviser's approval.

Subject content

English for Global Communication is designed to enhance the critical reading and writing skills of students for whom English is a second language. Students examine the role of English as a tool of global communication and critically analyse the assumptions about the impact English has as the world's dominant language. Students also review and analyse the role of global citizenship, and consider ways of taking action. Through these studies, students examine a range of model texts to help develop thier writing and presentation skills.

Prerequisite

For students from language backgrounds other than English. Students must meet the minimum English language requirement of the University.

How to enrol

Ask your faculty course adviser. Then, fill in your application form in the usual way, entering the course code and title given on this sheet.

After you are enrolled you can access the subject online. Follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the La Trobe University's Student page where you can access WebCT
  2. Go to Online Learning (WebCT)
  3. Click on Log in to myWebCT
  4. Enter your username and password. This is the same username and password which you use to logon to the University's computers.
  5. You are now at your WebCT page. From this page you can access the online units which you are enrolled in. If any of your other subjects are online (or partially online), they should be listed here alongside EDU4EGC (English for Global Communication).
  6. Click on EDU4EGC (English for Global Communication). You are now at the EGC WebCT homepage.
