English as a Second Language
Subject code: EDU1ESL
Please note: this subject is taught in semester 1 and repeated in semester 2. (Students can enrol in either semester, but not both).
Available as a 1st year subject
Studying in Australia may be different from studying in your own country, especially if English is your second language. This subject will help you:
- further develop your academic English
- understand and deal with differences in academic culture.
This is a 15 credit point subject available as a 1st year elective to international and local students from language backgrounds other than English, from any faculty, subject to the faculty course adviser’s approval. It is available in first and second semesters. There is a weekly 1.5 hour lecture and a 1.5 hour face to face tutorial for this subject. Students also take part in online activities through LMS.
Prerequisite
For students from language backgrounds other than English. Students must meet the minimum English language requirement of the University.

English as a Second Language 1 - Book of Readings.
This can be purchased from the University Bookshop.

Students attend one 1.5 hour lecture and one 1.5 hour seminar per week. (Total 3 hours of face to face classes).

Assessment
- Online quizzes 10%
- Plan (equivalent to 800 words) 20%
- Major essay (1,500 - 2000 words) 50%
- Test (2-hours) 20%
How to enrol
Ask your course adviserin your faculty. Then, fill in your application form in the usual way, entering the course code and title given on this sheet.
After you are enrolled you can access the subject online. Follow these instructions:
- Go to the La Trobe University's Current Students page
- Click on Online learning (WebCT)
- Click on Log in to myWebCT
- Enter your username and password. This is the same username and password which you use to logon to the university's computers.
- You are now at your WebCT page. From this page you can access the online units which you are enrolled in. If any of your other units are online (or partially online), they should be listed here alongside EDU1ESL (English as a Second Language).
- Click on English as a Second Language. You are now at the ESL WebCT homepage.
