Italian Studies Program

Teaching

The Italian Program at La Trobe has consistently had a high community and academic profile, maintaining strong links with the large (over 300,000) Melbourne Italian community and Italian diplomatic authorities. The Italian Program is committed to maximising student potential through: small class sizes, encouraging one-on-one teaching; state-of-the-art online teaching and presentation tools, enhancing learning; providing out-of-class contact hours, including informal gatherings and conversation groups; offering students scholarships and study abroad opportunities, so as to encourage culture and language learning.

Italian has been one of the major cultural languages of Europe for 700 years. The study of Italian offers a pathway into the fields of art, music and literature. Italy today is at the forefront of developments in modern culture, in the arts, sciences, industry and design.

Areas of study include:

  • Modern Italy
  • Medieval and Renaissance Literature
  • Italian Literature and Society from Unification Until the Present Time
  • Translation Studies
  • Italo-Australian Literature

Italian language is only available to students taught at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus. There is a fourth-year Honours program and the possibility of undertaking Masters and PhD degrees by research.
