Dr Rachel Winterton Biography: Dr Winterton was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Institute for Social Participation in February 2011. Prior to this appointment, she was employed as the research officer with the John Richards Initiative (JRI) at La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga. Her doctoral thesis examined the social characteristics of aquatic sports in nineteenth century Melbourne, and for this work she was awarded the 2010 Victoria University Medal for Excellence (Higher Degree by Research) and a 2010 Victoria University Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence and Research Training. Since commencing at the JRI in April 2009, Dr Winterton has conducted a program of research in collaboration with university and community partners examining ageing in rural areas, and her particular research interests include the role of place in facilitating healthy ageing, and the experience of disadvantage by older people residing in rural areas. Her postdoctoral research program will explore how communities and local agencies are managing and responding to challenges posed by local population ageing through systems of governance and health/social infrastructure, and will be undertaken through the JRI, and in conjunction with  the Centre for Sustainable Communities (LTU Bendigo). |
