La Trobe University Scholarship Programs

The University seeks to promote internationalisation by encouraging students from diverse source countries to enrol and encouraging Australian students to take up exchange opportunities offshore. Both initiatives include a developing scholarship base which needs support from donations.

The University has established the following broad categories managed by La Trobe International.

Academic Excellence Scholarship
This is for the top applicants in all bachelor and coursework master programs. Consideration is, in effect, automatic though we do ask applicants to flag their interest. Awards will be for 100% or 50% of course fees for the duration of the course.

Strategic and Commercial Scholarships
This category covers a diverse range of separate targeted programs. In general applicants will be selected from specific countries or programs. Supported programs include the Peace Scholarship and MACC Scholarship – see below for more details.

The Peace Scholarship
The Peace Scholarship program aims to promote global peace and understanding through international education experiences. It provides scholarships for meritorious and deserving students from around the world. For more information, please refer to the IDP website.

The Malaysian Australian Colombo Commemorative (MACC) Scholarship
Colombo Plan scholars have played key roles in Malaysia's development and in building Australia's close ties with Malaysia. This scholarship enables a two way student exchange under the MACC Scholarship, promoted through the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

Humanitarian Scholarships
These are mainly for currently enrolled students in unexpected financial hardship – and are made subject to a rigorous assessment process. Currently a number of overseas students face such difficulties and the current fund is unable to cover all cases.

International Student Exchange Program
In addition, La Trobe University has an extensive range of student exchange agreements with universities in Asia, Europe and North and South America. The University aims to increase the number of Australian students taking part in this unique experience. Increased scholarship support will enable academically excellent students to benefit for this experience. Please refer to the Student Exchange website.

Other Awards and Acknowledgements

A number of other scholarships and award schemes also exist. An article on Dr Fong in the La Trobe University Bulletin (October 2005, p.4) shows what is possible with a larger bequest. We are extremely grateful for his involvement in funding the ‘Henry Fong Awards’. We would also like to acknowledge the generous donation received from Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.

To make a donation or for further information about the benefits of sponsoring La Trobe University's scholarship program, please email Leon Lyell.

Please note that donations over A$2 are tax deductible in Australia and will be formally acknowledged by La Trobe University.
