Settling in tips

Tips to help you adjust to Australian life

Try some of the following suggestions to help you settle in:

  • Find someone to talk to about how you are feeling. You may want to discuss any concerns you have with friends and family, particularly those who have also travelled overseas. If you don't know anyone here to talk to, visit the staff at La Trobe International or La Trobes Counselling Service
  • Read about Australian culture. That way you will know something about what to expect when you arrive. It is especially helpful to talk to people of your own nationality, who have studied in Australia
  • Make yourself at home. Bring some of your favourite things with you, and learn to cook some of your favourite dishes. Bring photos of family and friends and of home

When you arrive in Australia make sure you:

  • Attend the Welcome Festival orientation, as well as the general orientation program for all students. You will gain important information and have the opportunity make new friends.
  • Keep up to date and get involved with events and activities going on at your campus by signing up to receive InterNews (Bundoora Campus edition: studentsupport@latrobe.edu.au)
  • Participate in programs offered by La Trobe International.
  • Sign up for one of the 50 clubs and societies that cater to a range of sport, recreational, academic, social and cultural pursuits. They provide an exciting opportunity for you to pursue your extra-curricular interests.
  • Ask for more support or information if you need it. At La Trobe, there are many staff members who are here to assist you in settling in. Our support staff have extensive experience in helping students just like you, and have probably seen students in similar situations.
