La Trobe University's responsibilities

La Trobe University (LTU) is obligated to comply with the legislative requirements of the ESOS Act 2000, incorporating:

  • National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2007 (National Code 2007)
  • Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (Assurance Fund Contributions Act 2000)
  • Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (Registration Charges) Act 1997
  • ESOS Regulations 2001.
LTU along with all education and training providers of courses offered to international students studying in Australia on a student visa are required to:
  • Register on CRICOS
  • Meet quality assurance standards
  • Comply with tuition and financial assurance requirements
  • Meet the obligations of registered providers
  • Report students who do not comply with student visa conditions to DEEWR/DIAC.

La Trobe University is responsible for ensuring both the University and students adhere to the criteria of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislation framework. This framework is in place to regulate the education sector’s dealings with overseas students studying in Australia.

The National Code is a set of nationally consistent standards that governs the protection of overseas students and delivery of courses to those students by providers registered on CRICOS - the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. Only CRICOS courses can be offered to international students studying in Australia on a student visa.

The National Code is established under the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000. You can access the National Code Explanatory Guide on the Australian Education International website.
