Short term overseas programs
Short programs are not only a great way to spend your break from university, but also gain an overseas experience without disrupting your course structure. Depending on the kind of program, credits for units can also be obtained by participating in a short program.
La Trobe University students have the option of participating in various short programs.
- Short term academic programs
- Clinical placements
- Internships
- Volunteering opportunities
Costs will vary from program to program. Students receiving credit are eligible to receive a mobility grant from La Trobe Abroad. Please see the Grants, scholarships and costs section for further information regarding funding available for short programs.
Application procedure
To be eligible to receive a mobility grant students must complete both a short program application form and a travel form.
Please retain a copy of the signed Faculty approval section of the form, as this will be used to ensure applicable credit is transferred to your La Trobe University course.
The application form must be fully completed including faculty approval and received by La Trobe Abroad at least 4-6 weeks before departure.
Each faculty have their own process for acquiring required signatures. Your faculty office should be consulted for advice. There is a section on the final page of the Student Application Form for your faculty office to indicate that form has been submitted as to their procedure.
Please note the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences requires students to obtain their Head of School's approval before submitting to the faculty office. Please ensure you retain copies of all documentation.
Students must also submit a mobility grant payment form, acceptance and conditions of participation form and travel form, available from our exchange page.
All short program application forms must be submitted to La Trobe Abroad at least 4-6 weeks before departure.
Short term academic programs
Partner program
Winter and summer short programs which are held at a La Trobe University partner university. Students are required to make an application directly to La Trobe Abroad, who will nominate you to the University. To participate on these programs students require a minimum weighted average of 65%. An academic transcript is to be submitted with the short program application.
Faculty led short program
La Trobe faculties and schools facilitate a number of short term programs and study tours each year. These programs are led by a La Trobe academic or arranged by the faculty in coordination with an affiliated international institution. As these may change each year please contact your faculty or/and school office for more information.
Independent short programs
Short term study programs coordinated through an external organisation. La Trobe University has developed strong relationships with AIM Overseas, ISEP and AIC who facilitate various international academic and internship programs each year. Students participating in these programs are eligible to receive a mobility grant. Students are required to submit a short term program application form, with faculty approval, to La Trobe Abroad before confirming registration or paying fees to the external organisation.

Volunteering opportunities
La Trobe students have the opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the global society by participating in a Volunteering Program. As volunteers, students can work towards making a positive contribution towards society, but can also grow as individuals themselves. Volunteering is also a great way of learning more about the functioning and sustainability of a non-profit organisation.
Students are able to source their own volunteer experiences and apply for credit back to their La Trobe degree. Credit cannot be guaranteed for all courses.
Students who do not receive credit for volunteering hours completed overseas are eligible to apply for the La Trobe Award.
