English language requirements

La Trobe now recognises the English programs of a number of institutions, please see the list of Recognised English Programs below.

Please note:

  • Students are still required to meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
  • Some courses may require a higher level of English language proficiency. Please go to Coursefinder for further details.

Undergraduate

For students applying for undergraduate degree programs or undergraduate Study Abroad units.

TEST
SCORE
IELTS Academic
A Minimum overall score of 6.0 with no individual band less than 6.0.
TOEFL Computer Based
A Minimum score of 213 (minimum score of 5 in essay writing).
TOEFL Paper Based
A Minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English.
TOEFL Internet-based
A minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20.
La Trobe University International College
English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level.
International Baccalaureate
Minimum of 4 in English A1 or A2 (Higher and Standard Levels) or Minimum of 5 in English B (Higher Level).
Year 12 or Equivalent
Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 or equivalent program may be acceptable.
TAFE
Completion of at least one year of TAFE study in Australia at an acceptable academic level.
English as medium of instruction 
English as the language of instruction in secondary and/or tertiary studies may be accepted.
United Kingdom A score of C or better in English in the Cambridge General Certificate of Education "O" level or AS level or Adv level.
Singapore
A score of C or better in the General Paper in the Singapore Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) OR a grade of C or better in English Language in the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level).
Hong Kong
A score of C or better in the English Language (Syllabus B) in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) OR a grade of D or better in the Use of English Paper at HKALE AS-Level.
India
A score of 60% or better in English in both Year 10 and Year 12 from secondary education in India.
Denmark
A grade of 7 in A-level English and 10 in B-level English on the new grading scale. English as the language of instruction at tertiary level for at least one year full time (60 ECTS) is also acceptable.

A grade of 11 is required if English is undertaken in Stream B Technical Pathway.
Finland
High School English grade of 8 or above is accepted.
Germany
Require Gymnasium (High School) or Abitur results between the range of 15-7 at (LF level) (Very Good to Satisfactory). Minimum of 6 with DAAD results indicating the upper two result range is also acceptable. English not at LF level: 10, if below 10 (minimum of 7) DAAD results must indicate the upper two result range and must not be submitted on its own.
Netherlands
VWO (pre-University Education) 6 (six).
HAVO (senior General Secondary Education) 7 (seven).
MBO (senior Secondary Vocational Education) 7 (seven).
Norway
High School: An English grade of 4 or above (Grade 0-6 with 6 being the highest).
Sweden
Upper Secondary School: VG.

Postgraduate

For students applying for postgraduate coursework and research programs or postgraduate Study Abroad units.

La Trobe University International College
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at postgraduate (EFS5 (70%) PG1) level.
English as medium of instruction
English as the language of instruction in secondary and/or tertiary studies may be accepted.
