Defer your offer
If you wish to defer commencement of your course for one or two semesters (a maximum of two semesters or up to one year is permitted), you must write to La Trobe International for approval.
Please send a written request (by email, fax or post) to La Trobe International indicating the following:
- your intention to defer
- your full name
- La Trobe University Reference ID Number (located on top right-hand corner of your letter of offer)
- the name of the course that you have been offered
- the original commencement date
- the new commencement date requested.
La Trobe University can only permit a student to intermit from their studies (defer their studies for up to 12 months) on the grounds of: compassionate and compelling circumstance; where La Trobe University is unable to offer a prerequisite subject; or where a student is unable to commence their course due to delays in receiving their student visa.
A student's enrolment may be cancelled due to non-payment of tuition fees. A student being found guilty of Academic Misconduct, or inappropriate conduct, or who has conditions set by the academic progress, may have their enrolment suspended. A student who has had their enrolment suspended by the University has twenty working days to appeal their suspension. Once twenty days have elapsed, or the internal appeals process has been completed and the decision to suspend upheld, a student will be reported to DEEWR.
For more information on University policy and regulation see the La Trobe policy pages.
Research students wishing to defer should email the research team. Deferral may affect the availability of academic supervision, and must be approved by the Higher Degree Committee.
Please note that you must submit a personal statement and any additional academic documentation (if applicable) to advise of studies or activities undertaken during the time of deferral. A revised letter of offer will then be issued stating the new commencement date.
