La Trobe Education alumni Tyler Thomas

Tyler Thomas heard about La Trobe from undergraduate colleagues at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Not long after, he ended up enrolling for a Graduate Diploma in Education at
La Trobe.

Tyler’s wife, Laura, is Australian and her parents live in Adelaide. In search for an adventure, the couple travelled around the country in their van for a year. They wanted to spend some more time in Australia before going back to Canada and teaching was part of their future plans, so a postgraduate Education degree at La Trobe seemed to fit in perfectly with their plans. Studying in a regional campus was a plus to their experience.

‘Being in a regional campus allowed me and my wife to not only afford a living while studying in Australia, but also be closer to many of the activities that we enjoy participating in, like mountain biking, hiking, fishing, spending time around beautiful places like Bright and Rutherglen,’ says Tyler.

Tyler is now back in Canada with his wife looking forward to starting teaching. Reflecting back at the Australian experience, he says that it was memorable on many levels.

‘It is impossible for me to nail down one specific thing that was the most important or useful thing I learned. The whole experience was an eye-opener on a very personal level. I feel like I have grown a great deal and I owe a lot to my lecturers and my classmates for such an amazing experience,’ he adds.

La Trobe University offers several undergraduate and postgraduate education courses across its three campuses. The Graduate Diploma in Education (P-12) is a one-year full-time course that prepares graduates to teach in primary and secondary schools.
