Finding adventure outside your comfort zone (Issue 9, 2012)
Ida Johansson came to Australia to challenge herself and find something new. Originally from Sweden, she is now undertaking a Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management) at La Trobe University.
After visiting Australia Ida decided she loved it here so much, she wanted to commence her study here. She has always loved the tourism industry, but adjusting to the academic world in a second language posed some difficulties.
‘I saw the Language Skills Advisors on a regular basis during my first year. They were a great help, not only in learning what lecturers expect from you but also what University is all about,’ says Ida.
Ida loves going to the footy (Australian Rules Football) to soak up the electric atmosphere, she also loves Melbourne’s multiculturalism and social culture.
‘I think I have cultural experiences every day since Melbourne is so multicultural. It’s fantastic to work and get to know people from all over the world while trying all the fantastic cuisine the city offers. Concerts and festivals have also been a highlight for me, in particular Metallica,’ says Ida.
Ida believes her course provides a good basic understanding of laws and regulations to run or work for a large organisation in the tourism industry. She also finds the human resources aspect of the course extremely interesting, as it is a growing field.
‘Further I enjoy the aspect of travellers and what makes them decide where to go and the different influences they have. There is some psychology in the course which is great. Ultimately ethics and community engagement have been the highlight for me.’
Ida has enjoyed her time here a lot, and will take all the memories of her rollercoaster trip with her.
‘I have had so much fun so far but it has been a struggle sometimes too. The things I will take with me are all the wonderful people I have met and the fact that I have grown to be an independent and strong person. I believe everyone should do something for themselves and Australia and Melbourne was a great place for me to get out of my comfort zone.’
