Community planning in regional Victoria (Issue 2, 2012)
William Valles Jr graduated last year with a Graduate Diploma in Community Planning and Development, he has since returned to the Philippines, but remembers his time in Australia fondly. William was lucky enough to receive an Australian Development Scholarship from AusAID, and believes this scholarship gave him the opportunity to enrich his potential, professionally and personally.
William was nominated by his place of work to take up a postgraduate study opportunity in Australia. He decided on La Trobe after speaking with Betsy Lee, one of La Trobe’s dedicated International Development Coordinators.
‘Betsy introduced me to the University during course mentoring and counselling in the Philippines. After finding all the information, I sought the advice of my supervisor, workmates and friends who then encouraged me to take up the course at La Trobe,’ says William.
William found the first month here in Australia a bit difficult, as it was the first time he had been away from his family; however he found a lot of support from lecturers, La Trobe staff and friends. He eventually was able to adapt to the new environment and different educational system.
‘My experience in Australia has been indeed a worthwhile one. I enjoyed making friends on campus and in church, as well as visiting some beautiful places and attending various events, such as festivals, field trips and sporting activities.’
William dedicated a lot of his time to his study, making the most of the University’s useful resources.
‘In my one year of study at the University, I devoted much of my time conducting research online and in the library, reading and studying journal articles and having group discussions.’
William also took time to appreciate the social aspects of La Trobe’s Bendigo campus.
‘I can say that the community on campus at La Trobe University is very vibrant. The staff, lecturers and students are helpful and approachable. The facilities and services are very accessible and excellent. That is why I found it easy to settle in.’
William is very optimistic that his international qualification from La Trobe will create career opportunities for him.
‘My study in Australia has greatly enhanced my knowledge, especially in the field of community planning and development. It has equipped me with necessary skills, particularly strategies, on how to make development plans. Moreover, it has further developed my confidence to speak with different people, and to become more independent.’
