Communicating across the world (Issue 4, 2012)
Alvaro Perez Pabon is studying a Master of Business Administration/Master of Telecommunication Engineering at
La Trobe University's Melbourne Campus.
Alvaro is originally from Colombia, he came here after finding that the Master of Telecommunication and Network Engineering course perfectly fit his field of interest. He has always been passionate about telecommunication, and was interested in pursuing this with an emphasis on the business side of things.
Although Alvaro found the initial adjusting phase a little difficult, he was still able to connect with his loved ones from home and quickly made friends here.
‘Technology is a good way to get in touch with the people you miss and love. Also, I have met really nice people here and they have helped me make everything easier,’ says Alvaro.
Alvaro is thoroughly enjoying his time in Australia, and has opened up to new experiences and a different environment.
‘I have enjoyed every minute in Australia. It has been a great experience for me to do interesting activities, learn new things and meet really nice people. Australia has offered me the possibility to have lots of fun from any simple activity. I will take with me all what I have lived in this time, this beautiful landscape and my friends.’
So far, Alvaro’s favourite event in Australia has been the La Trobe Business School End of Year Dinner.
‘The End of Year Dinner was the most outstanding social experience I have attended so far. It was a magical and incredible night to gather with my friends, classmates, teachers and all the staff from La Trobe Business School. It was an incredible time to have fun, dance and laugh a lot.’
A positive university environment is important and Alvaro had no problems making friends with lots of different people.
‘The community on campus is amazing. I have met really nice and kind people. The environment is interesting because you meet people from different walks of life and cultures and you can enrich your life and thoughts.
‘Studying in Australia has been the beginning of a new life. I have had to develop new skills to look after myself and open my mind to understand and respect differences.’
Alvaro has very exciting and positive opportunities in front of him, and he is confident his qualifications from La Trobe will help him on his way.
‘My international qualification makes me more competitive and creates better career opportunities in my country, not only because of the Master qualification I am doing but also for the opportunity to be able to speak a second language. The acquired knowledge and experiences make me a more attractive engineer in my home country.’
