Law report (Issue 24, 2010)
La Trobe international student Mohammed Aldhaheri
Mohammed Aldhaheri has just completed an English Course at
La Trobe’s International College and is now looking forward to commencing a Master of Laws International.
He arrived to Australia in late 2008 from the United Arab Emirates, hardly knowing anyone in Australia, but hopeful that he will receive the education he is looking for.
‘When I arrived in Melbourne, I knew hardly anyone and had limited English skills. The adjusting period was greatly assisted by the Arabic Students’ Advisor Richard Dirgham (Fouad). He has been a great help to the La Trobe International Arabic students’ community and without his support the whole adjusting process would have been a lot more difficult to handle,’ says Mohammed.
Since he has been here, he attended several lectures and forums organised by the University and was particularly impressed with a lecture on climate change. He feels that he already acquired many skills that will take his career further. The learning environment and the helpful community of staff and students were conducive to Mohammed’s success.
‘My experience in Australia has been unlike any other experience I have had abroad. Melbourne is a very multicultural city with people from all parts of the world. One of the most memorable things I will always look back on is how Australian people are so friendly and respectful towards all cultures and religions,’ comments Mohammed.
Mohammed will start his Master degree this year, and he is looking forward to progressing in his career as a legal counsellor for the Department of Military Justice, back in the United Arab Emirates. He is also looking at eventually continuing his studies with a PhD at La Trobe University.
