Ecuadorian student loving life at La Trobe (Issue 21, 2011)

SeleneSelene Orellana has only been at La Trobe University since July 2011, but she has enjoyed her time here immensely. Originally from Ecuador, Selene has come to Australia to study a Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Hospitality).

One of the subjects Selene takes is an English as a Second Language (ESL) subject. This subject gives students an opportunity to practise and develop their reading, writing and speaking skills in English.

‘By getting together in groups and discussing different topics, we not only get the opportunity to learn how to perform academically in English, but also to make new friends from diverse cultural backgrounds’ says Selene.

Selene believes that coming to Australia has been the best experience she has ever had. She has enjoyed getting to know the different places and people, as well as studying at La Trobe.

‘The most outstanding sporting event I’ve attended is an Australian Rules Football match; since it is a sport with different rules and techniques the experience was fascinating and it is fun to watch.’

Selene has found it easy to settle in at La Trobe and has appreciated the help offered to her by staff and other students.

‘The on-campus community has been the best; everyone is friendly and always willing to help with any issues or situations that have occurred during my time here at La Trobe, this has made it easier to settle in, since it is always nice to have someone that guides us through our stay, especially during the first days.

‘Studying in Australia has not only helped me to develop academically, but also as an individual, by acquiring new responsibilities and learning how to get things done by myself. Also, getting to know places that in I’ve never imagined visiting has been amazing and inspiring,’ says Selene.

Selene is confident about her future in the tourism and hospitality industry and believes her time here will give her an edge that puts her in front of competitors.

‘My international experience will create career opportunities by giving me a competitive advantage among my peers back in my country, it will also help me to understand different cultures and how they can work together effectively in a globalised world.’
