Catalina Barba Millan began a Bachelor of Media Studies at La Trobe University in February 2010, during that time she has been lucky enough to be involved in some truly exciting opportunities.
Catalina started her studies in South America in social communication and journalism, however she wanted to improve her skills in media production and gain some practical work experience, so she made the decision to come to Melbourne and study at La Trobe University as an exchange student.
‘My experience as an exchange student at La Trobe University was so enriching, and I liked this University so much that when my exchange program finished, I decided to become a full degree student here – so I could graduate from this great institution,’ says Catalina.
Catalina sees the La Trobe University course as a fantastic stepping stone into the media industry.
‘I consider that being a La Trobe University graduate opens you up to many good career opportunities that will boost your professional life and help you accomplish all the goals that you want to achieve.’
‘This institution is very well recognised in all of Australia and overseas, so in conjunction with a good academic performance, it can help so much to build a successful career,’ she says.
After she finishes her studies, Catalina plans to gain more work experience in television production and direction, which she really enjoyed when working for the ABC3 show Prank Patrol as an intern.
‘I had the opportunity to do the internship in media due to a course subject that encourages students to gain work experience before they graduate,’ says Catalina.
Catalina has truly enjoyed her time in Melbourne and at La Trobe University and she describes her time as an international student in Melbourne as ‘fantastic.’
‘This beautiful city has many good things to offer international students. The Aquarium, Melbourne Zoo, the Great Ocean Road, Mt Buller and many more, are all great places to visit.
‘La Trobe University and its staff are always willing to help international students with anything related to studies, accommodation, health insurance and extracurricular activities, to make the best of their experience in this city,’ says Catalina.
