Bali Style - global communications (Issue 17, 2011)
Ni Wayan Ari Widianingsih graduated from La Trobe University in 1998 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). She now enjoys running her own business, which publishes Bali’s only home-living decor magazine, Bali Style.
Ari lived at the University Lodge at La Trobe University’s Melbourne campus. After graduating, she went back to Bali to seek employment in the tourism sector and found a position as Marketing Coordinator at a five-star golf and spa resort, which led to a great deal of experience working with national and international media. She then moved on to become the Marketing and Communications Manager of Waterbom Bali, and is now happy running her own media company, Media Makara.
Ari attributes her success on her positive outlook and the people supporting her.
‘I would say that my passion and attitude have affected my path greatly. I have always been very fortunate to work with great people: colleagues, friends and family. It has been a long journey, and even when you think you’ve done your best, there’s always more you need to do better. I believe that any situation facing me is not as important as my attitude toward it,’ says Ari.
Ari’s personal philosophy that she brings to her work is one of seeking knowledge. She never stops learning, which keeps her excited in whatever she is doing. Her advice to those just beginning their education or career is to believe in themselves and always go above and beyond what is expected.
‘If we are to succeed in any endeavour, the first and most important person we must convince is our self. Success comes when we absolutely know we can achieve it. Having a good education is essential. It is also important to provide service over and above what is expected of us, no matter what the task may be.’
Ari remembers her time at La Trobe fondly and is very thankful for the quality education she received here. Her experiences at La Trobe’s University Lodge have also left her with some truly entertaining stories.
‘Living at La Trobe’s University Lodge was a great experience and provided a chance to make lasting friendships. I remember one time, a friend of mine (who shall remain nameless) was making toast for breakfast. Unfortunately the toast didn’t pop up and caused a huge amount of smoke in the pantry. This set off the fire alarm and the fire brigade promptly arrived with lights and sirens blaring. We were all shocked and very apologetic, and my friend was mortified that she might have to pay a A$1200 fine! Many anxious moments and discussions ensued. Thankfully, with the assistance of our Resident Manager we were forgiven and didn’t have to pay the fine. After that, we were all very careful about cooking anything. We still laugh about it every time we meet up.’
