Excellence Award winner Yee Qin Teh

Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering Honours student Yee Qin Teh was recently rewarded for his passion of computers. Qin’s latest student project brought him the Golden Key Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) Award for Excellence in Software Engineering.

Qin and his team worked on a unique design solution to a problem presented by a real-world client. The aim was to deliver real-time, local, personalised, location-based applications and services to clients. The service involved getting location-based data from several content providers in different formats. The problem they presented was how to integrate content from different data formats into a single database to avoid redundancy as well as improve usability.

‘I am honoured to receive the Defence Signals Directorate Excellence in Software Engineering Award. It means so much to me as it validates my achievements and ambitions in software engineering. This motivates me to pursue my passion - I plan to use the award to finance my postgraduate study,’ says Qin.

Qin has also been listed on La Trobe University’s Dean's Honours List 2005 and 2006.

The award was sponsored by the Defence Signals Directorate, a Golden Key partner, who is the national agency responsible for the collection, analysis and distribution of foreign signals intelligence and the national authority on communications and computer network security. DSD provides this award annually to Golden Key members.

‘The entries were highly rated - but Qin appeared to take more of a leadership role in his project and his achievement was considered more sophisticated’ said Mark Frost of DSD.

Qin plans to work in the IT industry when he graduates from La Trobe and he dreams of opening his own software company.
