Agriculture makes headlines (Issue 19, 2009)
La Trobe PhD scholar Preeti Roychand
Preeti only arrived at La Trobe five months ago, in June, having previously studied at Punjab Agricultural University in India. She won the IPNI scholar award (2009) on the basis of her previous publications, awards and the research project of her doctoral studies at La Trobe.
She felt attracted to studying agriculture in the first place because ‘it’s the only science that feeds the whole world.’ La Trobe University nominated her for the award and she was pleasantly surprised to hear that she was one of the winners.
'Receiving such type of recognition encourages me and enhances my future job prospects,' says Preeti.
Preeti’s doctoral studies focus on global warming and climate change and she is in the process of organising her first experiment in the labs at La Trobe University.
‘I am receiving a lot of support from my supervisors, Dr Judith Tisdall and Dr Michael Angove, who both have a lot of knowledge about my area of research and are experts in the field,’ adds Preeti.
As for the Bundoora campus, Preeti really enjoys the atmosphere here and the beautiful and lush green gardens are her favourite spot to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Even though she came to Australia only a short time ago, she was impressed at how friendly people are and thinks this helped her feel at home from the start.
