Hello there fellow La Trobians!
Hope your holiday is going well for you all, unlike for me. Oh, how I wish now that I had more work or uni! I’m so bored at home that I wish uni would start as soon as possible or that I had an extra job to fill in my days with work. But then again, my brain has been so idle for the past month or so that all it instructs my body to do is sleep! However, I have been successful enough to squeeze in some reading into my boring life, which I guess is what keeps me going.
I’ve always been fascinated by the weather in Melbourne! I still can’t come to terms with how quickly it changes. Yesterday, it was such a cold morning when I went to work that I had to have a jumper on to keep myself from turning into a block of ice, but hey, when I came back home at around 4pm it was scorching hot! It was so hot in fact that I couldn’t even stand for 10 minutes at the tram stop without wanting to throw myself in a pool! Thankfully though, we haven’t had as many 40 degrees summer days this time.
Hmm... I guess that’s all I can think of for now. I know it hasn’t been the most interesting of blogs, but pardon my rusty brain for that and I’ll try to come up with something new for the next blog.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
07 January 2010
Hello everyone! Well, I’ll start off by wishing everyone a very happy new year! It’s been a good couple of days for me so far. It was my very first New Years Eve away from my family, but it was good to be out in the city with my friends to see the fireworks. It rained throughout the night and it made us very wet and cold. Despite the rain, the trip to the city was worth it and we ended the great evening with a coffee to warm us up a bit before heading home.
You might think that that was the most boring ever New Years Eve. Not for me. I was just so happy to be dancing in the rain - something that you can’t do every day in Melbourne!
Anyway, I mentioned that I was flying back home in my last blog. So do you want to hear about how my two weeks at home went? Well, here it is. I’m sorry to burst your bubble but it definitely wasn’t the perfect two weeks I had been hoping for. Firstly because the very day I got home, my cat decided that it was ‘too’ pleased to see me that it bit me so hard that I ended up with teeth marks and a scratch on my right foot. Secondly because the rest of the days just shot past without me being able to do any Christmas shopping at all. And unfortunately for me, one of the wounds got infected (this happened the very next day) and I had to bed rest for two days before I could be up and about which made me waste precious time in bed!
I’m back in Melbourne in one piece and if anyone is wondering if I have got rabies yet, no is the answer. Thanks to my cat being vaccinated. So there you go, a top tip from me – always vaccinate your cats and dogs!
So that’s it for now. I will write again very soon. Have a wonderful week!

Home! Did someone say home?
Oh my gosh! I’m going home! Yes, I’m going home today and in a matter of hours I’ll be on a plane flying back to see my family and friends! I’m so happy that I don’t even know what to say. No more cooking, washing, cleaning for two weeks because it’s going to be mum’s special days for two whole weeks! Oh, I’m so excited! I’m sorry guys but I’m going to cut it short and go do some last minute packing now. Will sure write a bit more next time.
Cheers!
Dinesha.

Hello everyone. I’m back after quite a break. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting so long for my blogs but recently I’ve been neck deep with work and uni. You know, it’s not easy trying to manage to finish assignments on time, study for exams, fit in 20 hours of work a week, work out to stay healthy and still find time to do all the usual house stuff and find time to relax a bit. Phew! Being a student is indeed a full time job! Who knew it would be this hard?
Anyway, now that exams are finally over it’s time to relax. It’s the time to hit the beach and get on a little tan and do lots and lots of Christmas shopping. Although tanning is not my thing (given my colour), shopping IS my thing, which is why I have reserved some days just for shopping, f especially since I’m going back home this summer. I’ve also gone and got some subtle highlights in my hair (not that it’s the most interesting thing).
Other than that, nothing much has been going on in my life that I can think of that is worthwhile writing. So I’ll wrap it up here and I promise to not keep you all waiting next time. Enjoy the end of exam party ‘Huski’ and your holidays! Who knows, maybe I’ll bump into some of you at ‘Huski’.
Cheers!
Dinesha.

Hello there fellow readers! And so we come to the end of another great semester and a year! The weather is starting to warm up a bit and I’m sure all of you are glad that study is finally over for the year so you can kick back and relax during summer. Hopefully the summer will not be too scorching, and I’m sure most of you would know what that is like. I’m sure the 40 degrees Celsius days are not something I’ll be looking forward to.
So, any great plans for the holidays anyone? I know I have some. I’m looking forward to going back home even if it is just for 2 weeks. And hopefully I might get a chance to see more of wonderful Australia during the summer holidays now that I’ll actually be spending most of my holidays here.
As for uni at the moment, I’m glad that all my major assignments have been submitted. Feels like I’ve released some weight off my chest! Ah....it’s such a good feeling. However, it’s now time to finish off what I started and nail the exams and I’ll be free.
Did I mention the fact that I’m now a specialist subject tutor within the DRS? It’s actually quite neat to be a tutor. I mean the very thought of helping someone in need is a comforting thought. Anyway I’m going to have my first tutorial group very soon and I’m kind of nervous already. Let’s hope it all goes well for me!
Hope you all have a pleasant and a productive week!
Cheers,
Dinesha.

Aloha! My my, it feels like it was only a couple of days ago when I wrote my last blog but obviously it’s been almost a month since I’ve filled this space. So I thought I’d give you all an update about my wonderful life at La Trobe.
Have I told you that I always had a problem with not knowing where to start? Well, this is one of ‘those’ moments when I’m caught up between which of my thoughts to put down first. My mind seems to be such a complicated thing; it loves to collect its thoughts all at once, but can make them disappear in a jiffy making me lost in thought most of the time. Have you ever experienced the moment when you know the answer to a question during reading time of the exam and suddenly you can’t recall anything during writing time? Oh, how frustrating it is!
Anyway, it’s time to get back on track now as I’ve drifted a bit off topic as usual. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend the Academic Gala Dinner hosted by the DRS Residential Services. It was an event organised to recognise and acknowledge the high achievers living in residential colleges on and off campus. I was delighted to see many of my friends receive prizes for excellent academic performances. I also happened to meet Lily (who happens to be a blogger as well) whom I had never met before and had no idea she lived on campus. All in all, it was a wonderful night.
Since my last blog, I have also joined the gym at the Sports Centre (yes finally!). I know that people think I’m crazy to have joined the gym because I’m quite skinny and most people think that I don’t need to go to a gym but guess what, I think exercise is important for a healthy life no matter how skinny or not so skinny you are so I’m working out a bit now.
As for my uni work, it’s been nothing but assignments and mid-semester exams every week, day after day. Well, I don’t need to worry about that anymore because soon it’s going to be the mid-semester break and I’m going to be free as a bird without any uni work to concentrate on (that is in a perfect scenario when I have attended all lectures and tutorials and if I am on top of my studies which clearly I am not). So in other words, it’s more or less a week to catch up on uni work without having to attend lectures plus some good fun with my mates (hopefully I’ll be able to do a bit of shopping). Just a piece of advice from me (because I like preaching): make sure you use this break wisely since it will be the turning point and the difference between a pass and a fail or an “A” or a “B” at the final exam. So good luck to all of you! Hope you have a productive and awesome mid-semester break!

Hello there everyone and welcome to a brand new semester! For some of you this might actually be your last semester and for others it might be the first semester ever.
Whatever it is, I know that all of you out there are looking forward to it just as I am. I know that the pressure is on for those of you who would be graduating at the end of this semester but hey guys, take it slow and I’m sure you’ll do great! Good luck!
As for the newcomers, I hope you have had time to appreciate the wonderful atmosphere at La Trobe as well as a sound understanding of the expectations as a student. I know it’s all quite a handful to begin with but trust me when I say that the sailing will be smooth, the faster you know what is expected of you. Having said that, don’t forget to have fun while at uni because after all, uni is the time to study as well as to let yourself loose sometimes.
I know that it’s only the second week thus far but it looks like the lecturers aren’t going to take it slow (at least not in my subjects). I’ve already been landed with heaps of assignments and projects and I’m guessing most of you out there have been given lots of work to do at home. So it looks like it’s time now for me to dive right into one of my assignments!
So till next time it’s bye from me. Good luck with uni folks! Dinesha.

Hi there everyone and a very warm welcome to all the new comers! I’m sure most of you have attended at least some sessions of the Welcome Festival. Well at least the free lunches! Everyone loves free food and I know that you guys out there would not miss a nice free meal now would you?
Each Welcome Festival brings back sweet memories for me. Firstly, as a new student, then as a student host and an advanced host and now, as an arrival and registration assistant. I remember when I first came to Melbourne, for some reason, I found everything quite amusing and interesting. In fact I loved it here. I fell in love with Australia, Melbourne and La Trobe. Everyone was so understanding, cheerful and helpful. I remember seeing the hosts in the red t-shirts and wondering how could I become one of them. Everything about the hosts made me want to be one of them. It also made me realise how important they were in making the Welcome Festival a success.
Well, being a host made me realise that it was a lot harder than I thought, but also a lot of fun. Although I knew that there was pre-work going on, I had no idea how much preparation work actually goes in to the Welcome Festival until one of my friends was called in to help with the preparation of the welcome packs to be given out to the new students.
Another stunning revelation was made when I was working as an arrival and registration assistant. This time in the form of enrolment packs and communicating with students from a non-English speaking background. I found that every enrolment pack was carefully packaged manually by a student working on a casual basis and that he worked tirelessly to provide us (the arrival and registration assistants) with the enrolment packs that had just been processed.
I had never actually sat down to think about how difficult it would be for international students from a non-English speaking background to adjust to the language and culture in a country where the first language was English. In fact it was communicating with them and providing them with information about the Festival and answering their various questions that made me realise how tedious it is for them and for the staff to actually conquer that language barrier.
All in all, being a part of the Welcome Festival has made me realise how dedicated are the staff at LTI towards making the Welcome Festival the best experience for the students. It has also taught me many lessons in life and made me realise how lucky I am to be working around fun and cheerful people no matter how stressed they are!
So I hope that you too would be able to experience being a student host someday!
Cheers, Dinesha.

Hello there my fellow La Trobians!
Now that exams are finally done, we are free to do whatever we may please. I hope this vacation has started off well for all of you and you have many interesting trips and plans for the weeks ahead of you. I on the other hand have discovered that my idea of a holiday is work. Yes, I have been working since I finished my exams. It’s fun for a while (especially when the customers provide some entertainment for you) but it can get a bit tiring and monotonous. Having said that, I think I have found something interesting to do for the next two weeks of the holiday.
As most of you may be aware, July is the winter intake with many students coming in for studies at La Trobe. July is also the second intake of the year with many international students and study abroad and exchange students coming in to Melbourne. As some of you might know I was a student host at the International Welcome Festival for two intakes but this time I will be doing something a bit different. I won’t be an actual student host but instead I will be helping out with the registrations of new students this semester. Isn’t that interesting? I’ll get to meet students from all parts of the world as soon as they arrive! I’m so excited to be helping out with the registrations and I’m looking forward to working with some wonderful people including the staff at LTI and my friends who were student hosts in the past.
So I guess I better have some fun and relax a bit now because the next two weeks are going to be very busy. Keep checking this space for my next blog on all the fun moments from the Welcome Festival.
So until next time it’s Dinesha signing off.

Hello there everyone! A semester has come to an end in a flash, leaving us with exams!
I hope all your studies are coming along well and none of you have actually caught that terrible Swine flu which is sweeping the world at a terrible rate! Wouldn’t it be just awful if you had to be stuck in your room with a really bad flu and no one to talk to? Oh I hate to even think of it! But then again, I sometimes wish I had the flu, and didn’t have to do any exams. I feel dizzy when I see the pile of lecture notes I have to go through before my exam on Friday. After all, I’d be able to watch a lot of movies and have a wonderful social networking life (you know what I’m talking about, don’t you?).
Hey, wait a minute! I’m talking such nonsense! I think it’s all the facts in my head that make my brain malfunction sometimes. Of course I didn’t mean when I said I wished I had the flu. It would simply be awful. Besides I’m pretty sure none of you would actually want to sit for any supplementary exams. I mean, they are always held towards the beginning of the new semester so you are actually stuck studying for supplementaries when all your friends are going out and having a good time! How would that feel now? Terrible! So make sure you study hard and don’t you go looking to catch the flu to avoid having to sit for exams!
Best of luck for exams! Dinesha.
27 May 2009
Hello there mates! And it’s almost the end of May already! It was the month of many birthdays and many major assignments!
I was looking at my diary the other day when I noticed that I have at least two assignments due or a test on every Thursday and Friday of the month. That’s like, you need a break but you can’t afford to get one because you know you’ve got to start soon if you want to get somewhere with it. I’m sure you’ve realised that we’ve only got a couple of weeks before exams and the end of semester. Well done to those of you who have already started revision and for those of you who have even thought about it; don’t worry, you’re not late yet, I’m sure you can slowly get in the mood to study for exams.
Anyway let’s leave the depressing thoughts of exams and assignments and get onto more of the lighter thoughts. Autumn is here with the cold breeze and it’s such a wonderful time of the year at the Bundoora campus, especially since the campus is full of trees, and every single leaf in the trees gradually changes colour from green to of red or brown or yellow and fall to the ground exposing the bare branches. (I know this just sounds like such a childish thing to do, but have you ever just wanted to dive into a pile of leaves for no reason at all? I know I did, maybe because I sometimes get such weird and crazy thoughts!) The lake is such a sight at sunset. It’s almost the perfect time to sit back and forget all your troubles and work and free your mind.
I guess more of my day dreaming would put you all to sleep so I’m going to sign off now. I’ll be back again soon. Have a good week and I hope you get some studies done too. Bye! Dinesha.
30 April 2009
Assignments, lab reports, essays and exams! All in a week! I think I’m going crazy!
Hi there everyone! You probably have heard these complaints a lot in the past week or so! I know I’ve said it so many times myself and I’m sure there are a handful of people who would certainly agree with me. Yes, let’s face it, we hardly did any work during the mid-semester break because we were so busy chilling. We avoided doing any reading and preparation for the essays due the week after the break. I know that it doesn’t seem right that they did give us work to do over the break but I guess it was our responsibility to balance it up.
Anyway let’s not talk about essays and lab reports anymore and let’s talk about how fun the mid-semester break was! I hope it was a great week for you all. It certainly was for me. I went down the Great Ocean Road with my friends and it was so much fun. Although it turned out to be a very windy and rainy day (thanks to the Melbourne weather), we all had a great time! It made me realize that Australia was not just lots of bare land and desert area. I was in fact quite surprised to see the wet rain forests and beautiful waterfalls hidden deep beneath the rain forests. It made me feel as if I had gone back home! Sadly we had to get back home without seeing the Twelve Apostles, but we’ll plan it out better next time.
That sounds so adventurous, doesn’t it? Anyway I think it’s time I stop day-dreaming and get back to my assignment. I hope you enjoy writing your essays!
Dinesha.

Aloha! Yes, I'm back at uni after what seems a long break. I must admit that almost 3 months of doing nothing at home has made me so lazy that I just could not get myself to believe that uni had already begun. It was only when the biochemistry lecturers told us that we had an exam coming up in week five did we finally get into the 'uni mood.' (Frankly, I think even then there were some people who didn't get the wake up call.)
And to think that five weeks have already gone by amazes me. I mean, it is known that time flies when you're having a good time. But for five weeks to have just drifted away without me having done half the work I was supposed to do, that sounds almost insane!
Anyway, since I've only got three days of uni this semester I started ‘job hunting' and I was lucky enough to get a job quite quickly. It's almost been a month since I've started working and I must tell you that I'm absolutely enjoying it. It's certainly been a different experience for me altogether considering the fact that I have never actually done any paid work back in my home country. Maybe because I didn't really have the need to do it or maybe because I was so involved with extra-curricular activities whilst schooling that I didn't have time to do a job. But I guess the real reason I never worked when I was in Sri Lanka was that our culture is such that we tend to depend more on our parents till we actually finish higher studies and start working full time. However I have noticed that this trend has been changing over the last couple of years and more school-leavers find employment whilst undertaking higher studies.
I think it's great to be working because you can actually spend a bit more freely without having to think as much about it and being a burden for your parents. Working at a young age also gives you more experience and builds up your skills so that when you're actually ready to join the workforce as a full time employee, you are ready to face the challenges that would come your way. It also teaches you to maintain a balance between work, study and your social life. So in case you're wondering what I'm on about, I'm just trying to tell you that doing a part time job while studying has great advantages.
Anyway I think I've rumbled on for quite a while now and I'll stop now to make sure I don't bore you to death. So till next time it's Dinesha signing off. I hope you have a pleasant week ahead.
4 March 2009
Well, let's face it my friends, our holidays have finally come to an end and it's time to go back to uni. It's the time to wake up early and rush to the 9 o'clock lectures and to attend the lab classes! For some of you it may be the last year of uni and for others it may be the first year at uni. A word of advice to those freshmen out there, don't be discouraged by the early lectures, the long lab classes and the busy timetable! Take it slow and plan out your work. All you need is a bit of determination and planning to succeed at uni.
I always loved the beginning of a new semester or a new year because it's the time when everything is new- new books, new stationery and even new units. But the reason I love the start of a new semester more than anything else is the International Welcome Festival organised by La Trobe International! They are the best two weeks I'll ever spend at uni; helping out new students and meeting lots of people from different cultures and backgrounds! The last two weeks saw many international students arrive at La Trobe to attend the Welcome Festival and to enroll at uni. Two weeks full of fun and enjoyment with many activities such as the City Treasure Hunt, the Wildlife Walk, the free lunches and the barbies and of course, the big party at the famous Eagle Bar!
Orientation week is when most new students make friends for life and find their 'best mates'. It's also the time to appreciate someone else's cultures and traditions. For me, as an international student host the week was all about helping students in their transition period and working hard to make someone happy when they were fearful of being in an unknown place and maybe a bit homesick. It gave me a lot of satisfaction to see a smile on their faces. I have also made many friends and learnt to say hello in many different languages.
I hope all of you out there are looking forward to the start of classes just as I am looking forward to it and I'm sure I'll bump into some of you on campus this semester. Good luck mates!
Dinesha.
18 February 2009
Hey mates! Guess who's back in Aussie land? You're right. I'm back from my long holiday. It definitely feels good to be back and it certainly was much easier to bid goodbye to my family and friends this time because I had done it once before. I was also thankful that I was moving back to the same college I stayed last year (which made me feel I was on familiar grounds). I was more familiar with Bundoora than last time, so it was easier to get some essential shopping done. But what thrilled me was to meet my old Aussie friends again.
Just as there are happy moments in life there are sad moments too as I discovered when I got here. Bushfires in Victoria! It is definitely a hard time for all those victims. Not only have their lost their homes, but they've lost everything they had including the ones dear to them. Years of hard work just gone up in flames and only ashes remained. It's a time for all of us to support all those in need. A donation of a few dollars or some dry rations or lending a hand to organisations such as the Red Cross could make a difference at this time of need. Even a few words of consolation would mean the world to them at this time. So I sincerely hope that all of you out there can join hands to bring at least a moment of joy to those affected by the fires. Until next time it's Dinesha signing off.
15 January 2009
So we meet again my friends. A year has gone by so quickly. Hasn't it been an exciting and wonderful year in Australia? It's been a year full of study, hard work, determination and of course many social events! A year that opened many doors to a whole new experience of life at university, which gave me a chance to meet people from all parts of the world! This will defintely be an unforgettable year for me and I'm sure many of you out there feel just the same as I do. It was the year that I stuck to my New Year resolution and I am so proud of myself!
It's been such a pleasure writing about my first year at university and I hope to meet all of you this year to share my experiences as a second year student! I wish you all a Happy New Year!
22 December 2008
Hi there! Here I am writing again, just as I promised when I was in Australia. Hope all of you are enjoying the long break. Some of you must be already reunited with your families (like me).
I first started writing this blog when I was in transit in Singapore, but I was so exhausted by the seven hours journey that my mind was completely blank and after three hours I had only written just the greeting and one other sentence. My brain just refuses to think when it's tired. I finally reached Sri Lanka after almost half a day of flying and transit and I am so glad to be home.
I feel like I'm in heaven. My grandmother and my mother prepared so many different types of sweets ranging from date bars to jam tarts and delicious ginger cakes that I had trouble choosing which ones to eat first. I'm also enjoying the unique Sri Lankan curries that my grandma makes so well. I feel so blessed to have a grandma like her!
Just as I start to sink deep into the holiday mood, comes the spoiler - exam results! (Of course I'm exaggerating a bit, it's not really a holiday spoiler). I hope it's something I can be proud of and I'm sure all of you out there are with me on this.
It's time for me to say goodbye, but keep an eye out for my blog in the next edition of La Trobe Times.
27 November 2008
Hey there fellow La Trobians! Hope all of you have been enjoying your holidays. I have a lot to write about this week!
I guess I'll start on a light note by reminding you all how good it feels to have holidays! I have so much time on my hands that I could go to bed late, sleep in, watch a whole lot of films throughout the day, try out loads of delicious desserts and most of all spend some quality time with my friends without having to feel guilty about not doing my assignments for once! Now, isn't that the best feeling anyone can ever have? Talking of films, I was lucky enough to go watch the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace on the day it was released. Well...I'm not the greatest James Bond fan and I haven't really watched all the other ones either, but I happened to be in the city with my friend on that day so we thought why not go watch it and I enjoyed it.
Anyway, since last week I have been dealing with a new problem, a problem I have never encountered before and I'm sure many of you out there could relate to me. Moving out! Yes, I know how stressful it is! Don't you find it really hard to pack everything you own in a bag (or more likely bags)? I really don't know about you, but I had so many things in my small room that I found it so difficult! The packing seemed never to end but when I did finally packed it all away, came the real troublesome part! What do I do with all of it? Fortunately for me, my uncle and aunt offered to hold on to some of my stuff till I get back and two other friends very kindly offered to keep some of my belongings too, making me feel very privileged to have a caring uncle and aunt and loving friends. Anyway, now I'm all set and ready to go back to my dear family in Sri Lanka. No doubt it will be a very long and tiring journey, but nevertheless I'm looking forward to it very much!
And so it's time for me to say bye but keep an eye for my next blog as I will be writing all about being back at home, right from Sri Lanka. Have a wonderful week ahead!
13 November 2008
Hi there everyone! Hope the exam period was a success to all of you out there. As for mine, it wasn't the best but yeah, I can't complain too much I guess.I can only hope that I will get some good results. Believe me when I say that it's so hard to sit and study for exams when you know deep inside that you'll be going back to see your family and friends in a matter of weeks. I was so excited about the whole going back thing that I simply couldn't gather myself to do some productive studying. (Ah...I guess that could be my excuse if I don't get good results).
Anyway, I am so excited that exams are finally over. I can party as much as I wanted and have fun! I don't have to worry about grades or assignments for another good three months. Ah! Don't I just love holidays!
Well, for all of those who haven't finished their exams, just hang in there like I did. They'll be over in no time and then you can break loose! So it's bye from me till next time. Wish you all a very happy holiday!
30 October 2008
Hey there mates! It feels so good to be writing again! Just the thing I needed to relax after a long day of hard work. If anyone out there hates studying for exams and are wondering why they even exist, don’t worry because you’re not the only person out there who thinks like that! I’m one of them too but if you sit and think for a moment, you will notice how important they are and that they are not all that bad. After all, your results reflect the effort you’ve put in. Of course luck sometimes plays a role in it but that is a different story.
I remember my lecturer saying that the secret to good results is attending lectures, listening carefully (because they give hints about exam questions) and revising the material. Now however if you haven’t done all of these, don’t worry. That’s why I think the uni gives you a study break. I see it as an opportunity for those who haven’t been on top of their studies to do some catching up.
The lecturer also said that a lot of little breaks in between studies, avoiding too much caffeine during study times and a good night’s sleep before the exam helps to improve your performance at exams. Gosh! Don’t I sound like a preacher now! Anyway, I think I should be signing out now. Good luck for your exams mates! Dinesha.
16 October 2008
Hey there everyone! So it’s back to uni after the break. It’s only been a break of one week and I already feel too lazy to get out of bed and go to the early morning lectures! I can’t believe how one week of little work and lots of play could make someone feel this way.
I’m glad that I worked at least a bit during my break. If I hadn’t done any work during the break I probably wouldn’t be able to pull myself together to study for the end of semester exam! It’s scary that there are only 3 weeks left for me to finish 1st year. I know I keep going on about how soon time passes but everyone studying at La Trobe would agree with me on that. I just think that everyone enjoys being at uni and in Melbourne so much that they feel that time passes way too fast.
Having said that, I still can’t wait to be done with my exams so that I can fly back home to see my family and all my friends! Aren’t I going to have a good time during the holidays meeting up with all my friends and catching up on my social life? I’m sure it’ll be nice to just relax after a year of hard work. It’s time for me to sign off so it’s bye for now. Dinesha.
24 September 2008
It’s September and the season of colour is here my friends! Spring!!! The days are gradually getting warmer, the trees are springing back into life and there is a stunning freshness in the air. Ahhh… I love spring! The bushes are in full bloom. The uni is full of flowers ranging from the fieriest of oranges and reds to the calmest and coolest purples and blues. The birds are out and about, chirping joyfully and the ducks at uni are happily swimming in the moat. It’s such a sight! Aren’t I glad that spring is here! I was kind of getting tired of the wet, cold wintry days.
But then again, spring means that the semester is almost coming to an end and it’s soon going to be exam times! I wish I could just proceed to second year without having to sit any exam… Since that is obviously impossible, I’ll have to start studying soon. So it’s bye for now. Hope you enjoy the good spring weather! Dinesha.
September 2008
Have you ever been to La Trobe on Open Day? Woah! Now that’s something you’d never want to miss! I was amazed by the carnival-like atmosphere that was created on the 30th of August, especially since it was a Sunday and La Trobe is usually quiet and peaceful on Sundays.
Well, for those of you who don’t know what an Open Day is, it is basically a day when the uni is open to the public and anyone wishing to get a first hand experience of the uni or what is on offer there is welcome to come along.
This time, the Open Day was loaded with really fun activities which included live music, funky science experiments, free food stalls and information sessions on courses and ongoing research projects at La Trobe. A band constantly played awesome music to keep the crowd entertained while the student volunteers were busy showing the interested students (which included both future undergraduate and postgraduate students) and parents around campus. Some volunteers were busy in stalls, selling delicious food to hungry high school kids while another group of volunteers joined hands with the lecturers to demonstrate awesome experiments. Even I was lucky enough to assemble a circuit; something I’d never done in my life! (That of course was with a little help from my friend who studies electronic engineering, but nevertheless it was a wonderful experience.)
All in all, it was a day full of excitement and knowledge and I’m sure all those who attended the Open Day can’t wait to be a part of the La Trobe community. So its bye from me for now…Hope you have a wonderful month ahead…
Dinesha.
