Career Panel with international alumni (Issue 10, 2012)

Career panelLa Trobe International, in collaboration with the Alumni and Advancement Office, the Career Development Centre and the Golden Key International Honour Society recently hosted a Career Panel with international alumni to discuss the best ways for international students to find a job after graduation.

Three alumni returned to La Trobe University on 26 April 2012 to share personal stories on their lives and careers after graduating from La Trobe University. Carly Scott from La Trobe University’s Careers Division moderated the conversation. Some 30 students packed the board room to hear career advice shared by panelists working in the business and hospitality sectors. The alumni panelists agreed that international students need to view their international student status as an advantage in the job market: the key is to market the extra knowledge and skills they bring to an organisation, as well as their ability to work effectively across cultures – skills that are increasingly important in today’s workforce.

Each panel member relayed stories about how they entered the field, skills they recommend, tips for job interviewing and extracurricular activities they found to be useful in their careers. With three panelists being recent graduates, it was extremely impressive to see the diversity and complexity of work they had already been exposed to.
