Melbourne campus
Project description
Key goals for future development of the Melbourne campus are to improve the integration of the core campus area with the Research and Development Park, allow expansion of the number of beds in the residential precinct and create some memorable buildings and spaces. The Master Plan provides a framework for the briefing of future building and infrastructure projects.
A benchmarking study of the overall campus space needs against other universities indicates that there is sufficient capacity to accommodate all the activities of the Melbourne campus in the core area for an indefinite period into the future, up to and exceeding the maximum effective size for a single campus, which is regarded as 60,000 full-time students (almost three times the number of students currently enrolled in Melbourne).
Implementation projects
- Develop medium to long-term capital development and space master plan and program of rolling refurbishments.
- Create a new public transport hub at the Western End of the Student Axis, transform Science Drive into a continuous pedestrian link to the tram stop and create a new Gateway to the campus on Plenty Road.
- Expand the Agora to the west of the Thomas Cherry courtyard and provide a “hawker’ style food court.
- Develop non-Core land in a sustainable way to provide amenity and a financial return to the La Trobe University.
- Develop the ponds and wetlands to provide an accessible habitat link from the Wildlife Sanctuary to Darebin Creek with pathways and bike routes connecting to the regional bikeway network.
- Provide a new, accessible gateway for the Wildlife Sanctuary to encourage community access and involvement with La Trobe University.
- Together with community partners, sustainably improve amenity of sport and social infrastructure.
- Replace campus signage and wayfinding signage using La Trobe’s new graphic identity.
