On Friday 22 August, the High Commissioner of Pakistan, His Excellency Mr Jalil Abbas Jilani visited La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus to meet with staff and students. |
During his visit Mr Jalil Abbas Jilani gave a public lecture entitled ‘Regional Security and Economic Situation: Pakistan’s Perspective,’ highlighting the economic cost of tensions in South Asia and the worsening security situation in Afghanistan. The lecture was organised jointly by the La Trobe’s Department of Economics and Finance, School of Business and the La Trobe Institute for India and South Asia (LIISA). Mr Jilani stated that regional peace, stability and economic development cannot be achieved as long as Afghanistan remains unstable. He emphasised Pakistan’s positive contribution to bringing about stability in Afghanistan and explained the need for greater recognition of its role by the international community in dealing with the very complex and difficult situation in Afghanistan.
The lecture was followed by a lunch with Professor Belinda Probert, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Raymond Harbridge, Dean, Faculty of Law and Management, Professor Gary Magee, Head, Department of Economics and Finance, and several other staff with interests in South Asia. Mr Jilani met with La Trobe international and Pakistani students at a reception in the afternoon.
This visit is part of a programme of activities to further strengthen the strong links between La Trobe and South Asia, and follows the very successful India Independence Day Celebration which was held the previous week.

The La Trobe Institute for India and South Asia (LIISA), in collaboration with La Trobe International and the Indian Sub-Continent Students Association (ISSA), held an India Independence Day celebration at Radford Hall, Chisholm College on Thursday, 14 August. The celebration was held the day before India’s Independence Day on 15 August to accommodate some of the dignitaries. The event was attended by staff of La Trobe, Indian and non-Indian students and also members of the Indian community.
The India Independence Day celebration started with speeches by the Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University, Professor Paul Johnson; the Minister assisting the Victorian Premier on Multicultural Affairs, Hon. James Merlino MP; the Consul General of India, Ms Anita Nayar; and the Vice President of the Victorian chapter of the Australia India Business Council, Mr Richard Cameron. These were followed by Indian food, a speech by the President of ISSA, and finished with a play and dance performed by ISSA.
In his welcome speech Professor Johnson remarked that La Trobe University has a long and proud association with India and that, “India represents the future of the 21st century”. In 1968, Prime Minister India Gandhi included a visit to La Trobe during her Australian tour. Over the years La Trobe has developed an active programme of academic engagement with India: the Borchardt Library has one of the greatest South Asia collections in Australia, and Hindi and Sanskrit have been taught at La Trobe for 15 years.
Furthermore, the University is an institutional member of the Australia India Business Council and participates in various community activities including the sponsorship of the ‘Best Film Award’ which will be called the ‘La Trobe University Best Film Award’, for the Bollywood Film Festival to be held in Melbourne in September this year.
La Trobe continues to maintain its strong connections with India. The University has close associations with many Indian academic institutions including University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, National Council of Applied Economic Research and Jadavpur University in Calcutta.
