Useful websites are often hard to find. This page covers a range of quality web-based resources that may be of use for teachers and Peer Mentors alike. there are general sites and subject specific ones below. Contact us to recommend other sites.

 

General sites for use with science and mathematics

The following sites are good general resources covering lots of science related topics.

E5 Instructional model

FUSE - a great DEECD resource for teachers and students relating to all aspects of the curriculum. It includes lots of links to resouces here in Victoria.

VELS - Victorian Essential Learning Standards

Planet Science (UK) - useful site with a range of activities for all ages.

School Science (UK) - another useful site with lots of activities for both teachers and students. Run by the Association for Science Education.

Science Teachers Association of Victoria - useful resources and up to date information on science teaching.

Science Upd8 (UK) - excellent for resources and lesson activities (requires registration - free).

Questacon - lots of useful information on the latest ideas in science.

Twenty First Centrury Science (UK) - some useful teaching resources.

Australian Academy of Science - promoting excellence in Australian science.

Science by Doing - is a national initiative that aims to actively engage junior secondary school students in learning science through an inquiry-based approach. The project is managed by the Australian Academy of Science in partnership with CSIRO, the Australian Science Teachers Association and the education systems of the states and territories. The Australian Government through its Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations funds the project.

Understanding Science (USA) - based at Berkley, California, this site has an excellent perspective on science teaching fundamentals with quality resources (worth teachers subscribing to).

Nuffield Foundation (UK) - great resources for both primary and secondary teachers (maths/science).

National Science Foundation (USA) - well worth subscribing to.

ABC Science - good to subscribe to their regular emails for the latest science news.

The Association for Science Education (UK) - great site for teachers.

Science Continuum - useful DEECD teaching resources and lesson plans on a range of topics.

BBC Bitesize (UK) - great online activities for students in maths and science ((NOTE KS1= Grade 1-3, KS2= Grade 4-6, KS3= Year 7-9, GCSE= Year 10+).

Primary School Science & Technology - a range of resources to help younger students explore science.

Museum Victoria - covering the Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum, they have some wonderful online resoures for education. searches can be made by theme or year level and they also have virtual tours available online.

 

Biology

Virtual Genetics Education Centre (UK) - based at the University of Leicester, this site is great for a range of resources to teach about genetics.

Biolab - Specialist Science Centre with programs in bioscience. Based at Belmont High School, Geelong.

Gene Technology Access Centre - Specialist Science Centre with programs in cell and molecular biology. Based at University High School, Melbourne.

Ecolinc - Specialist Science Centre with programs that offer a range of ecology based programs. Based at Baccus Marsh College.

BioEd Online (USA) - lots of useful presentations, slide sets, classroom lessons and teacher resources.

Biology Corner (USA) - lots of great resources for teachers.

CELLS Alive - useful site with interactive models and images as well as biology content.

 

Chemistry

Quantum Victoria - Specialist Science and Mathematics Centre with programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Based at Charles La Trobe College, Melbourne.

Chem4kids - useful site with all the basics and activities for students.

Creative Chemistry (UK) - useful site with lots of activities and worksheets.

Practical Chemistry (UK) - lots of useful experiencents for all levels.

Periodic Table of Videos (UK) - useful site from the University of Nottingham with lots of video and links on the elements (YouTube links).

Chemical Education Digital Library (USA) - lots of good multimedia to explore periodic table and molecular structures.

 

Earth Science

Geoscience Australia - great resources for both students and teachers.

Earth Science Australia - excellent resources and information on all aspects of earth science.

U.S. Geological Survey (USA) - great resources for the latest on earthquakes and volcanoes and much more.

British Geological Survey (UK) - great site for geology resources and activities.

Earth Ed - Specialist Science Centre with programs in earth sciences. Based at Mount Clear College, Ballarat.

 

Physics

Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) - Specialist Science Centre with programs in space sciences. Based at Strathmore Secondary College, Melbourne.

Practical Physics (UK) - great set of resources from the Nuffield Foundation for teachers of physics.

Physics & Ethics Education Project (UK) - may be of interest to those looking at the ethical application of physics eg medical pysics, robotics.

Interactive simulations (USA) - award winning simulation site from University of Colorado. studetns are able to change variables for a number of experiments and see the consequences - great site.

Institute of Physics (UK) - great site for all things physics.

 

Mathematics

Intermaths (USA) - support materials for teachers to become better mathematics educators.

Interactive Mathematics (USA) - covers a range of topics in a highly interactive format (secondary).

The Mathematical Association of Victoria - useful resources and up to date information on mathematics teaching.
