What to do when you first visit your school

  • Sign in at reception.
  • Meet the link teacher.
  • Show your Working With Children Check.
  • Familiarise yourself with the school.
  • Meet your classroom teacher.
  • Exchange contact details.
  • Talk about the class you will be working with.
  • Find out where you should meet your teacher each week.

What to do during the first week of your placement

  • Sign in and meet your teacher.
  • Introduce yourself to the class, explain what you are studying, explain how often you will be visiting and what you will be doing.
  • When you can, wander around the class, get to know the students’ names and ask them what they are up to with their work.
  • Check with the teacher to see if there are specific students they want you to work with.
  • Speak with your teacher at the end of the lesson to find out what the class will be doing next week.

Tips for giving a presentation to the class

  • Describe what you are studying and how you decided to study it.
  • Explain how it is relevant to the students' lives.
  • Tell the class the most interesting thing that you have learnt so far.
  • Tell the class what it is like being a university student and how it is different to school.
  • If you use a PowerPoint presentation include lots of pictures.
