The course is four weeks long and consists of approximately 120 contact hours, featuring 6 hours of supervised practical teaching in TESOL.
At La Trobe the course is run by staff with a wide variety of teaching and training experience in countries as diverse as France, Egypt, Libya, Thailand, Indonesia, Russia and the UK.
Outline
The CELTA is an entry to the profession of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching, and is, therefore, very practical in content. Every candidate is required to complete a minimum of six hours observed teaching with classes of adult learners. In addition s/he will observe qualified teachers with live classes for a minimum of six hours.
Trainees work in groups of approximately six people, sharing the teaching practice (TP) sessions of two hours and liaising closely so that the sessions are coherent and productive for the students. On the first day of the course trainees will normally meet and talk to their prospective TP students. Each trainee begins their TP on the second day with a 20-30 minute lesson to the students.
Detailed lesson notes are given out by the tutors in the first two weeks of the course, but by the end of week three trainees should be preparing reasonably independently, consulting the trainers only when necessary.
