• NoticeNews: Fair Work Ombudsman releases results of compliance campaign in Newcastle Read more
  A compliance campaign conducted by the Fair Work Ombudsman last year identified eight contraventions in underpayment of workers and five contraventions in record keeping and payslip content among employers of international students in the Newcastle area, recovering underpayments of $64 701 for 80 employees.
  
  The targeted businesses included restaurants, takeaway outlets and hand car washes. International students formed a small percentage of the total employees in the targeted businesses, and the identified contraventions applied to student and non-student workers.
  
  The campaign was prompted by print and radio coverage of alleged non-payment or underpayment of international students by employers in the Newcastle area. Many of the employers alleged to be underpaying international students were sole traders or partnerships and were outside jurisdiction of the Fair Work Ombudsman.
  
  The compliance campaign provided education to employers and international students about their rights and responsibilities under Commonwealth workplace legislation.
  
  All the employers targeted during the campaign are now voluntarily complying with their obligations under Commonwealth legislation.
