Professor Carol Smart

Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds. Director of the Centre for Research on Family, Kinship & Childhood

Professor Smart's current research includes a study of contact and residence disputes in court; a follow up study of children in post-divorce families; a project on divorce and its implications for wider kin relationships; gay and lesbian ‘marriage'; and transnational families. She is author of a The Changing Experience of Childhood (2001, with Neale and Wade), Family Fragments? (1999, with Neale), and editor of The ‘New' Family (1999, with E. Silva). She received her MA in Criminology (1975) and her PhD in Socio-Legal Studies (1983) both from the University of Sheffield.
