Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds. Director of the Centre for Research on Family, Kinship & Childhood Professor Smart's current research includes a study of contact and residence disputes in court; a follow up study of children in post-divorce families; a project on divorce and its implications for wider kin relationships; gay and lesbian ‘marriage'; and transnational families. She is author of a The Changing Experience of Childhood (2001, with Neale and Wade), Family Fragments? (1999, with Neale), and editor of The ‘New' Family (1999, with E. Silva).
