Professor Lisa Merrill

Professor of Performance History, Gender, and American Studies in the Department of Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies at Hofstra University , New York
Professor Merrill was an IAS Fellow at the La Trobe University Institute for Advanced Study. She specializes in gender studies of nineteenth century theatre and culture. Her award-winning publications explore concepts of on and off stage emotional passions, and performers' overt and covert communication with audiences. During her stay at the IAS, Professor Merrill will be furthering her current work investigating how race, gender, sexuality, and nationality were performed in nineteenth century culture. Her books include When Romeo Was a Woman: Charlotte Cushman and Her Circle of Female Spectators.
