Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Kent at Canterbury , U.K.

Professor Ellis is widely published. He has taken a special interest in life writing and is the author of a book on Wordsworth's Prelude as autobiography. He has also written the third volume of the new Cambridge biography of D. H. Lawrence (Dying Game) and a book on biographical method : Literary Lives: Biography and the Search for Understanding.

While at La Trobe's Institute for Advanced Study he worked on an anthology of tests designed to illustrate how Shakespeare achieved his present iconic status in British culture.
