Professor Ekman's current research examines the role of life history in avian cooperation; combining history and ecology.

The approach of his project while at the Institute is to use phylogenetic data to place responses to ecological conditions in a historically controlled perspective. Phylogenies will be used to identify closely related, preferably congener, species differing in breeding system (cooperative/pair).
