As a developmental psychologist, Professor Patterson's research has focused on the family, peer, and school contexts of child and adolescent development.  Best known for her research with lesbian and gay parents and their children, Professor Patterson has published widely on sexual orientation, human development, and family psychology.  A past-president of the Society for Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues, which is Division 44 of the American Psychological Association
