MDG Conference - Call for Papers

We now invite theme abstracts, paper abstracts, poster presentation abstracts and other forms of practitioner submissions for the conference.

Possible Themes


Submissions can be on any of the following themes, but are not limited to those listed as long as relevance to the conference’s above objectives can be shown.

  • Necessary but not sufficient– accelerating progress and looking beyond the MDGs
  • Learning and teaching – preparing the next generation to work in development
  • Technology / global networking – shortening the accountability chain
  • Any focus on specific MDGs
  • Social inclusion and the MDGs
  • Business and MDGs
  • Programming for the MDGs
  • Climate change versus MDGs – setting agendas
  • Perspectives on MDG Gaps mid-term
  • MDGs in regional contexts
  • Gender and MDGs
  • Human rights and MDGs
  • MDG development effectiveness


Key Dates

Final deadline for submissions is the 14th of August 2009.

Submissions that bring in new ideas or present ideas in innovative ways will be prioritised, as will those that are submitted in partnership between two different sectors or two different disciplines. Submissions can deal with specific MDGs or contribute to discussions about the goals as a whole. We also welcome submissions that will further opportunities and ideas for collaboration between our sectors with the express aim to achieve more effective development practices and research.

Submissions that are successful will be invited to be presented in any one of the following ways:

  1. Innovation Avenue: For the duration of the conference poster presentations will be displayed in meeting areas. These should visually demonstrate key learnings, case studies or research. Authors will be given the opportunity to explain these during a dedicated time to trigger reflection and generate lively discussion.
  2. Plenary contribution: Some submissions will be deemed appropriate for panel presentations during plenary contributing to a specific theme and kept to a strict time limit. Questions from the audience will follow each panel discussion.
  3. Parallel sessions (90 minutes): Some presentations will form the basis of a nominated theme, convened either by the author(s) of the submission or by the organising committee. These can be conducted as debates, discussions, workshops, panel presentations, or other forms of presentations.

Abstracts should include your name, institutional affiliation, contact details, preferred form of presentation and abstract of no more than 300 words.

Abstracts should be emailed to Dr Sue Chaplin: s.chaplin@latrobe.edu.au, with ‘MDG abstract’ in the subject line by August 14th 2009.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance by September 30th 2009 at the latest.
