Faculty welcomeMildura campus
The Rural City of Mildura is located in the far northwest corner of Victoria, on the southern bank of the Murray River. Once an ancient sea-bed, the region is truly in the Red Country. It is very hot in the summer, but the middle months of the year offer pleasant temperatures and abundant sunshine. With an annually rainfall of only 300 mm., this region would verge on the arid were it not rendered fertile by irrigation and fertilizer. Now, Mildura is notable for its horticultural production, particularly of grapes and citrus fruits. It is also notable for its rich pre-history, which include the sites about the Willandra Lakes; and for its more recent pastoral history. The city is renowned for fine food and cultural events. There is an annual Writers’ Weekend, which regularly draws Australia’s leading novelists and poets, and overseas guests, and musical festivals. The Faculty offers the following degrees at La Trobe University’s Mildura campus; Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Visual Arts and the Bachelor of Graphic Design. Disciplines offered in the Bachelor of Arts, include English, History, Philosophy and Social Sciences. Elective units in Archaeology and Art History are also offered. Teaching is in a variety of modes. Lectures are delivered either face-to-face, or by video-conferencing, or by DVD recording. Tutorials are either weekly by resident tutors, or at regular intervals by visiting tutors (e.g, fortnightly or in ‘block’ mode.) The Mildura campus now enjoys the benefit of a modern building with state-of-the-art facilities, including a computer laboratory that students may use to access the Library’s extensive data-bases; and there is a University librarian based in the TAFE Library to answer student enquiries and facilitate access to materials.
