La Trobe University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers an array of challenging and dynamic degrees which can be tailored to suit a variety of individual interests.

The University is situated on a number of different campuses within Victoria. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers degrees at several campuses: the largest grouping is in Melbourne (in the northeastern suburb of Bundoora), with others based in the regional cities of Bendigo (with links to Shepparton), Mildura and Albury-Wodonga. At each of these campuses there are not only teaching programs, but also significant research commitments and community involvement.

Historically, the Faculty’s core degree was the Bachelor of Arts (BA), a degree which continues to be popular due to the wide variety of majors associated with it. However, there are now also a number of specialist undergraduate degrees on offer which focus on specific areas. Additionally, there are numerous postgraduate programs by course work in a number of areas within the Faculty. The Faculty is proud of its strong tradition of delivering quality teaching and the independent, government-run, ‘Course Exit Survey’ has consistently shown extremely high levels of student satisfaction.

The research profile of the Faculty is also very strong. At present, it has over 30 elected Fellows of the Australian Academies of either Humanities or Social Sciences. In addition to this, the Faculty houses five of the University’s areas of ‘Research Strength’, and it regularly excels in nationally competitive grants schemes. In association with such facts is the strong cohort of excellent research students that the Faculty attracts from both Australia and internationally.

The Faculty has a long and distinguished tradition of community involvement, with many members of the Faculty providing public commentary and critical discussion of various contemporary events and issues. Activities like involvement in student societies and contributing to student journals provide opportunities for Faculty students to also engage in such issues.
