Study at

Albury-Wodonga campus

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has had a presence on the Albury-Wodonga campus for over ten years, steadily expanding its range of unit offerings and staff over that time. Our mission is two-fold. We are committed to offering the same quality of tertiary education that students receive on other campuses of the university.

Disciplines we offer at the undergraduate level at the Albury-Wodonga campus are: Art History ; English ; History ; Philosophy Politics; Social Sciences ; Sociology

Postgraduate studies can also be undertaken in English , History , Politics and Sociology.

We offer majors and individual units in all the above disciplines. In each discipline, we offer a range of units which allow considerable flexibility of choice. Through a combination of locally-based lecturers, visiting lecturers from Melbourne and state-of-the-art electronic transmission of teaching materials between campuses, we offer a broad program which is relevant to both future careers and life interests.

Persuasion and Public Speech – DRA2/3PPS

This unit will be offered as a first semester unit. It is a workshop-based unit with three aims. Firstly it provides training in public speaking and for other situations, such as debate and discussion, which call for confident, organised, informed and persuasive speech. The techniques and principles are taught and the skills of critical listening developed. Students analyse examples of public speech; live, recorded and written. Material for analysis is drawn from a variety of formats and periods and is chosen to engage with the particular interests of the group. The third aim is to introduce some theoretical reflections on persuasive speech. There is a brief outline of classical rhetoric and some attention to recent theorists of what has been called 'the new rhetoric'.

Class requirement: One 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour workshop per week.
