Pathways
Planning a pathway is smart. It’s a way of getting into your preferred course even if you don’t get the ATAR you were hoping for! The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has many different pathways available to help you get into your chosen degree, and advice is always available to help you make the right decision.
Pathways to consider
- Transfer from another course
- Single subject enrolments
- Relevant TAFE courses
- Mature age entry
These pathways can lead to a place in the Bachelor of Arts or a place in one of our specialist degrees.
1. Transfer from another course
If you meet the criteria you are able to transfer from one course to another. The Bachelor of Arts can act as a pathway into all of our specialised courses, provided you meet the academic requirements.
2. Single subject enrolments
Enrol in two 1st year single subjects offered within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, pass them both and we will guarantee you entry into the Bachelor of Arts. These subjects can then be credited to your degree!
Single subject study is available in first and second semester. There is no ATAR requirement to study single subjects and you do not apply through VTAC, however there is an upfront cost so contact the Future Students Centre for more information.

3. TAFE Courses
Some Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma TAFE courses can assist you in creating a pathway into your chosen degree. Successfully completing a Diploma of Mass Media and Communications, offered through La Trobe Melbourne, means you will be eligible for second year entry into a La Trobe University media studies or journalism course.
4. Mature age entry
When applying as a Mature Age applicant to La Trobe it’s not all about your academic record. We also take into consideration your work experience, motivation to study and ability to succeed.
- Semester 1 start through La Trobe Mature Age Special Entry Scheme and VTAC/UAC
(prior to December 9th)
- Late direct entry to the University
- Mid year direct entry to the University for Semester 2 start
For more information on mature age entry and the extra requirements for applicants please contact the Future Students Centre.
